Energy Saving Electric Floor Heating Systems from ThermoSoft International Corporation Reduce Heating Costs Up to 40% During Winter

ENERGY STAR approved thermostats and ThermoFloor electric floor heating systems achieve up to 30-40% energy savings compared to conventional gas forced-air heating systems.

Buffalo Grove, IL (MarketWire) November 25, 2008 - With winter quickly approaching, and the cold weather already in full swing all around the US and Canada, many people are already feeling the chilly effect on their heating bills. But heating your home doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg says ThermoSoft International Corporation, a market leading manufacturer of do it yourself radiant floor heating systems.

"Our floating floor electric underfloor heating systems are more efficient because warmth is concentrated near the floor, not the ceiling, heating only the rooms where you need the warmth when you want it," said Dr. Eric Kochman, President of ThermoSoft International Corporation. "This can save consumers up to 40% in energy costs, something everyone can appreciate during this economy."

Unlike forced hot air systems, which blow hot air from the ceiling, radiant floor heating systems heat the home in the most efficient way possible, from the floor up. The floor is consistently comfortable, without hot spots or cold drafts, and when your feet are warm, your whole body is warm. Dust, pollen and other allergens can also be disturbed with a forced hot air system, so electric floor heating systems are preferable for those with allergies.

ThermoFloor radiant floor heating systems should last a lifetime, and ThermoSoft floating floor warming systems are warranted for 10 years, making them a great, money saving investment for any home.

ThermoSoft manufactures ThermoFloor radiant floor heating system for laminate and floating wood floors, and ThermoTile radiant floor heating system for tile floors. Both systems are installation friendly and ship same day or next business day.

ThermoSoft offers factory-direct prices, same day shipping, lifetime technical support and free installation floor plans. For more information on heating your home with ThermoFloor, visit www.thermosoft.com.

WHAT ABOUT THE COST OF RADIANT FLOOR HEAT?
By Dr. Eric Kochman

Will it affect my heating bill?
Typically, electric radiant floor heating will not increase your heating bill. Numerous analyses and publications confirm that electric radiant floor heating is more likely to save money on your heating bill compared to conventional forced-air heating systems. Forced-air heating systems need energy to warm the air and to supply a blower, which forces the air through filters and air ducts. The warm air loses heat on its way requiring additional energy expenditure.

There is no such heat loss with electric radiant floors. Forced-air heating systems create ascending air flow that concentrates the warmth in the upper part of the room (at the head level) leaving the feet cold. The natural response is to compensate for the discomfort by setting the central thermostat at a higher temperature.

Numerous publications point out that radiant floor heating systems create sufficient thermal comfort with the thermostat set 5-7°F lower than forced-air heating systems. For example, the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) reports a "comfortable" temperature is 70°F. Forced air systems must be set at 75°F to feel this warm, whereas with radiant floor heating, you can set your thermostat to 66°F and feel comfortable. This reduces your energy costs substantially. According to ASHRAE (standard 55-1992) for each 1 degree F that you set your thermostat lower, you will reduce your heating bill 4-5%. So, warm floors installed in a substantial part of your home can reduce your heating costs up to 30-40%.Of course, your savings will be commensurate with the amount of warm floors installed. You should not expect noticeable savings if you install warm floors only in small areas of your home.

Assuming there are no savings, the cost to run radiant floor heating in a 15 S.F. bathroom floor with an electric radiant floor heating mat generating 12 Watts per S.F. would be 36 cents for a 24 hour day based on a utility rate of 8.3 cents per kilowatt hour. However, since the heat generated by the warm floor in the bathroom will circulate with your central heating system, your overall heating costs will not necessarily be 36 cents higher because your central heating system may cycle less often. In addition, using programmable thermostats with your radiant floor system will help save energy by automatically adjusting temperature up or down or turning the floor on or off during times of the day when the room is not occupied.

How much does radiant floor heating cost and where can I buy it?
Relative to the comfort and the long-term value provided to your home, radiant flooring is not a burdensome capital investment. It is important to make price comparisons because prices vary widely across providers of radiant floor heating systems. Electric radiant floor heating prices average $10-12 per square foot at retail but can be as high as $20-30 per square foot for custom fitted mats. Simple electric cable products are priced the lowest but can involve higher installation costs because they are very labor intensive to install. In contrast, electric radiant floor heating mats carry a slightly higher purchase price, but may involve a lower total cost because the heating wires are pre-spaced on mats for quick and easy installation. Buying direct from the manufacturer may assure you of achieving the lowest possible cost. Thermosoft offers radiant flooring systems direct from the manufacturer for tile under the brand name ThermoTile™ and for laminate and wood floors under the ThermoFloor™ brand name.

At Thermosoft, our goal is to make heated floors, which were once considered a luxury found only in custom homes, fully accessible to all homeowners and do-it-yourselfers. Warm electric radiant floors are increasingly becoming a necessary part of comfortable and healthy living in North America.

Make the right decision on time and enjoy your heated floors!

ARE HEATED FLOORS SAFE?
By Dr. Eric Kochman

Safety is most important for manufacturers and homeowners alike. Electric radiant floor heating systems are constructed to eliminate any possibility of electric shock and some eliminate exposure to electro-magnetic field (EMF). For example, our ThermoTile™ brand of radiant flooring is very likely the safest electric radiant floor heating system in the western hemisphere because it satisfies the highest European and Japanese safety standards where electric floor warming has been utilized for decades. ThermoTile's heating cable system has four polymer coatings that withstand repeated mechanical, thermal, and current loads. The system is completely hermetically sealed from moisture. The heaters are doubly protected from short circuit and current shock by a ground wire and a ground shield that completely encapsulates the heating element.

We have given special attention to the elimination of EMF in our ThermoTile radiant flooring system. ThermoTile heating cable consists of two parallel wires whereby the electric current "runs" in opposite directions causing current superposition and cancellation of the electro-magnetic fields in the two wires. Moreover, the two parallel heating elements are encapsulated with a special metal foil that completely suppresses residual EMF and electro-static emissions that could interfere with other appliances in your home. People concerned about EMF should look for manufacturers displaying "ZERO EMF" on their products to be assured of EMF elimination.

Most manufacturers recommend connecting electric radiant floor heating systems to a circuit protected by ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) in wet areas. The GFCI will cut off the electric current in the rare event that there is current leakage due to mechanical damage of the cable. Also look for electric radiant floor heating systems that comply with the safety standards of Underwriters Laboratories in North America (as indicated by the cULus symbol) as well as the European safety standards (as indicated by the CE symbol).

Not only are radiant floors safe, they provide thermal comfort and help to prevent minor colds and rheumatic diseases. Heated flooring is particularly helpful in maintaining good health in young children and the elderly who are more susceptible to the common cold. Modern medicine has determined the ideal temperature for human comfort is between: 75-79 degrees F at foot level and 68-72 degrees F at head level. In times past, people would say "Keep your feet warm, and your head cold." Such heat distribution can be realized only with the help of warm floors.

Another important factor in the health aspect of heated flooring is the absence of air convection which blows dust and allergens around the room. The absence of blowing air is very favorable for people who suffer from allergies. Other advantages of electric radiant floors are that they do not deplete the oxygen like gas heaters and high temperature convection heaters.

Warm floors can be a very safe and environmentally friendly way of heating your home!

WHY INSTALL WARM FLOORS IN YOUR HOME?
By Dr. Eric Kochman

How many times have you stood barefoot on an icy bathroom or kitchen floor on a cold winter morning? Although you may be absolutely delighted with the look of your tile floor, wouldn't it be nice if it wasn't so cold? Well, where there is a need, there is a way to meet it.

In European countries, heated flooring has long been an accepted part of any comfortable dwelling. With the rising cost of energy, alternative heating systems have become increasing popular in North America. For example, during the last five years, the square footage of electric radiant floor heating installations has increased 600%. Any homeowner would gladly agree to have a warm bathroom or kitchen floor. Unfortunately, many people are not aware of the availability, ease-of-installation and affordability of electric radiant flooring. The decision to install a floor heating system must be made before remodeling or starting new construction. Many people regret that they were not well informed about heated floors at the right time. That is why we would like to explain why an electrically heated floor is reasonable and efficient.

In our experience, we have discussed radiant flooring with numerous floor installers and homeowners. Following are some of the common questions people ask when they consider how to create home comfort with radiant flooring while taking into account the family budget.

Where does it make sense to install an electric floor heating system?
One purpose of heated flooring is to make your finished floor warm and comfortable. The most popular places to install radiant floor heating are in the entry, kitchen and bathrooms where ceramic, stone, granite, or marble tiles are installed. Heated flooring in basements and in rooms over garages will make these rooms more livable.

Are heated floors durable?
Yes. Electric radiant floor heating mats are now constructed with all the latest world achievements in the field of safe and efficient floor heating. Unlike hydronic (water) based systems, electric radiant floor heating mats do not include any mechanical or moving parts that can become worn, corroded or clogged. When used correctly, electric radiant floor heating will be as durable as the electric wiring in your home. It is necessary to understand that electric radiant floor heating must be installed and used according to a few simple rules. For example, electric radiant floor heating systems are imbedded in a thin layer of cement where the heating elements are fully protected from mechanical damage.

How difficult is it to install a floor heating system?
Some floor heating systems are easier to install than others. Thermosoft's radiant floor heating systems are designed for simple installation by do-it-yourselfers and efficient installation by professionals. For example, ThermoTile™ heating cable is fastened to a fiberglass mesh which is quickly rolled out on the subfloor and easily manipulated to fit the floor space. The heater is so thin (less than 1/8") that the floor level does not increase any more than it would with a normal tile installation. Since you use the same amount of thin-set mortar to cover the heater and lay the tile, there are no additional costs for cement mortar. "Cold" lead wires are connected to only one end of the mat making the connection to the power supply most convenient. Although electric radiant floor heating mats are do-it-yourself friendly, the National Electric Code requires that the final connection to the power supply be made by a licensed electrician.

What warranty is provided for heated flooring?
Manufacturers of radiant floor heating systems generally provide reasonably long-term warranties for their products. Such warranties vary from 10 to 25 years, which says a lot about the confidence that manufacturers have in the durability and safety of their products. In the case of product failure through no fault of the homeowner, manufacturers typically replace the product or refund the purchase price. Thermosoft is the only manufacturer in the North American market to provide a limited lifetime warranty. This means that you can be assured of long-lasting performance once the system is correctly installed. Installers must be reasonably careful to insure correct installation according to the instructions given. For example, it is important to safeguard against cutting the heating wires of any electric radiant floor heating system during the installation process due to carelessness or inadequate preparation of the subfloor.

We hope that we have answered the main questions of interest to people who may be considering warm floors for their homes.
