Floor Heating Cable

Combine cables as needed to fit open walkable space, avoiding areas covered by cabinets, vanities or other permanent fixtures. The heating cable cannot be shortened, so avoid over-filling. Each cable will connect to the thermostat, so larger cables will reduce required connections. At 3 stud spacing on a sole thermostat, 120V cables cover up to 175 ft²; 240V cables cover up to 350 ft². DO NOT MIX VOLTAGES.Contact us for project assistance.

Thermostats & Critical Components

A floor heating thermostat is necessary to control your radiant heat system. Most of our floor heating thermostats are dual-voltage and include a 5ma GFCI, unlike models from online warehouse retailers. A thermostat is capable of a 15-amp load; adding a power module or relay will increase system load capacity. Each includes a floor sensor, but a backup is recommended. Select 1 thermostat for each zone desired. Contact an expert for guidance.

How To Install ThermoTile Heating Cable With Schluter DITRA-HEAT Membrane

This overview does not substitute for a full reading of the Installation Manual.

The below steps will take you from beginning to end simply, but please refer to the full Installation Manual or call us to go over a more detailed installation plan.

ThermoTile Cables are an easy way to add heat to a tile floor, and pairing them with an uncoupling membrane adds additional benefits to the structure of your floor.

Before beginning your installation:

  • Ensure that you have a structurally sound subfloor
  • Choose a starting point for the beginning of the mat, we suggest beginning near the planned placement of the thermostat.
  • Conduct resistance tests on the heating cable before during and after the installation.
1Make sure you have the right amount of material.
Step 1 of Installation of floor heating with ThermoTile cable on Schluter Membrane is to make sure you have the right amount of material.
  • The membrane should cover the entire floor space.
  • Follow heating cable spacing from walls and studs according to the manual.
  • Heating elements should be in areas where you can walk, stand, or want to heat. See your manual for areas to avoid heating
  • Contact support if you have any questions prior to your installation.
2Prepare conduits and electrical boxes for thermostat installation later.
Step 2 of installation of floor heating with ThermoTile cable on Schluter membrane is to prepare conduits and electrical boxes for thermostat installation later.
  • Complete electrical rough-in
  • This step may be done after cable is laid but is more difficult to do later as location of thermostat may change location of heating system.
3Spread thinset on subfloor and install membrane.
Step 3 of installation of floor heating with ThermoTile cable on Schluter membrane is to spread thinset on subfloor and install. membrane.
  • See your Schluter® DITRA-HEAT membrane manual for recommended trowel and type of thinset for your subfloor.
  • Membrane should cover entire floor.
  • Cut excess membrane to ensure floor is level.
4Position heating cable between the studs on the membrane.
Step 4 of installation of floor heating with ThermoTile cable on Schluter membrane is to position heating cable between the studs on the membrane.
  • Cut notch for lead wire.
  • See manual for approved cable spacing.
  • Pro tip-Push cable between studs with flat side of the trowel.
  • Make sure not to use a sharp metal trowel which could nick or damage the heating cable.
5Position sensors
Step 5 of installation of floor heating with ThermoTile cable on Schluter membrane is to position sensors.
  • Highly recommended to install a backup sensor.
  • Position sensor evenly between 2 heating cables.
  • Do not cross the heating cable.
6Thinset above using flat side of trowel to get embedded completely
Step 6 of installation of floor heating with ThermoTile cable on Schluter membrane is to thinset above using the flat side of the trowel to get embedded completely.
  • Work in sections, covering entire membrane so you can continue installing membrane whether it's wet or dry
  • Pack thinset into membrane grooves.
  • Make sure not to use a sharp metal trowel which could nick or damage the heating cable.
7Add appropriate amount of thinset and trowel notch-wise
Step 7 of installation of floor heating with ThermoTile cable on Schluter membrane is to add appropriate amount of thinset and trowel notch-wise.
  • Make sure not to use a sharp metal trowel which could nick or damage the heating cable.
  • Consult National Tile Contractors Association (NTCA) for proper amount of thinset.
8Install Tile
Step 8 of installation of floor heating with ThermoTile cable on Schluter membrane is to install tile.

ThermoTile Cable & Schluter DITRA-HEAT FAQ

What is ThermoTile Cable?
ThermoTile Cable is a loose heating cable system designed for ceramic and stone tile installations. ThermoTile uses FiberThermic heating elements, or high quality heat cables to apply gentle radiant heat to your flooring. ThermoTile gives you the greatest flexibility by arranging in any pattern with an uncoupling membrane. Pairing loose cable with a Ditra-Heat membrane gives you all the benefits of an uncoupling membrane and also makes the layout of your loose cable easy. Uncoupling membranes add stability to your tile floor, and in certain applications provide a thermal break. The studs in the Ditra-Heat membrane give you a guide for spacing your loose Thermotile Cable.Shop Now
Is this a safe product to put in my home or business? What about Electromagnetic Field/EMF?
Yes. All our floor heating solutions endure rigorous development and in-house US quality control testing to ensure that your floor heating system is reliable and safe. Due to the shielding used in ThermoSoft products, our radiant heat systems add virtually zero EMF.Shop Now
Can I use ThermoTile Cable with my floor material?
ThermoTile cable with Ditra-Heat membrane is only compatible with tile floors. If you are heating another type of floor, be sure to check out our floor materials pages that will give you guidance for selecting the right system for your floor covering.Shop Now
How do I install ThermoTile Cable? How does it all get connected?
ThermoTile Cable is embedded in mortar or self-levelling cement under your chosen floor material. Just have an electrician make final connections to the thermostat and to your home’s electrical system. Explore our installation guides and resources for more information! ThermoTile Cables are wired to a floor heating thermostat in parallel. The number of cables and layout of the room will affect the exact process of how to wire things together. Please see the Installation Manual for explicit directions, or contact our experts for assistance.Shop Now
Will this add height to my floor?
Minimal, ThermoTile cable and DITRA-Heat Membrane will add 1/4" to your already planned tiling project. Remember, ThermoSoft does offer ThermoFloor and WarmStep as options that do not need to be embedded in cement to be installed under a wood, vinyl, or laminate floor.Shop Now
Can I combine more than one ThermoTile Cable to fit a space?
Many projects involve using more than one heating cable, but this means that multiple cables are wired in parallel to the thermostat. The thing to remember is that you are not daisy-chaining heating cables, but rather the cables are working together to cover the appropriate square footage of your heated area.Shop Now
Can I cut, shorten, or reshape the system?
You CANNOT cut the heating cable as this will damage the heating cable preventing it from heating up and void your warranty. In some applications, reducing the spacing used as you run the cable through the Ditra-Heat membrane can allow you to fit a cable into a slightly smaller space than is our standard estimation. Consult with us or a qualified professional before deciding to pursue this method. If you need additional answers to the questions about cutting, shortening, and reshaping ThermoTile, just give us a call so we can match the right length of cable to suit your needs!Shop Now
Can I shorten the lead wires?
The lead wires, also known as cold leads because they do not produce heat, can be cut, shortened, or spliced with additional cold lead cable to lengthen them.Shop Now
What do I do with areas not covered by heating system?
ThermoTile Cable allows for almost complete coverage of most room sizes and shapes because of the flexibility of arranging loose cable. However, almost every project will result in some areas that are not heated. This is perfectly normal, the DITRA-HEAT membrane is installed in both heated and non-heated areas resulting in a level floor throughout the entire space.Shop Now
Is this Ditra-Heat membrane something that I really want in my floor?
Absolutely. Ditra-Heat membrane paired with our superior heating cables adds a number of benefits to a standard tile floor.Shop Now
How many watts per square foot does ThermoTile Cable output?
The standard output is about 12 watt per square foot at 3 inches average on center spacing. But his figure can vary if the cable spacing deviates.Shop Now
How much will it cost to run this system?
The cost to operate is a complicated question to answer, as electrical rates vary by area, the home's insulation, and even by time of day. Additionally, a cost-to-operate is further complicated because the money spent on your radiant heat can result in a net savings on total utilities cost due to reduced use of your traditional HVAC, which is added to by the fact that you will spend less on HVAC system maintenance by relying on electric radiant heat. So, keeping in mind the nuances of describing the operating costs of an electric radiant heat system, just contact us to discuss this as it would relate to your specific project.Shop Now
How hot does ThermoTile get?
Sometimes, we have to answer a question with a follow-up question. Usually, we are asked about “how hot” a system gets for a couple of reasons, so it is important to know why do you ask? Are you concerned about providing enough heat to adequately warm your space? If so, a properly installed ThermoTile Cable can provide about 10-15 degrees Fahrenheit of temperature difference above the ambient temperature of the room. In practice, this is more than enough, even in extremely cold climates. We are positive that you will be entirely satisfied with the heat produced by ThermoTile. Are you concerned about applying too much heat to your chosen floor material? If so, fear not! ThermoTile is designed to have a gentle, reliable, and consistent delivery of heat to your floor material. Just give us a call if you need some guidance. Lastly, we highly recommend choosing a thermostat that includes a temperature limiter if this is one of your concerns!Shop Now
How long will ThermoTile Cable last? How long is the warranty?
ThermoTile has a lifetime limited warranty and we have yet to see a ThermoTile Heating Cable fail due to old age. ThermoTile requires no regular maintenance once installed correctly and if left undisturbed (remember your radiant system is installed under your floor covering when planning a remodel!). The thermostats that we offer are warrantied for 3 years because we only use thermostats with GFCI protection which, per national electric code, is recommended to be replaced every 3 years. Replacing a thermostat is simple, easy, and inexpensive.Shop Now
