What is ThermoFloor?
ThermoFloor is an all-in-one underlayment and heating system mat, providing sound and impact dampening, moisture abatement, insulation from the subfloor, and gentle radiant heat to the floor covering and room above the heat system. ThermoFloor replaces the need for a standard underlayment pad, but non-heated areas are filled in with plain underlayment padding, which we can provide with your order. ThermoFloor uses patented FiberThermic heating elements to provide the absolute safest radiant heat in your home, and is the best radiant heat system to pair with your floating floors.
Is this a safe product to put in my home or business?
Yes. All our floor heating solutions endure rigorous development and quality control testing to ensure that your floor heating system is reliable and safe. Additionally, ThermoFloor uses a heating element made from FiberThermics, which is a non-combustible material that further eliminates the risks from overheating that some associate with electrical heating components.
Can I use ThermoFloor with my floor material? What if my project uses an underlayment?
ThermoFloor is compatible with a wide variety of floor materials including wood, laminate, vinyl, and carpet. There are certain considerations that you will want to make in order to ensure that ThermoFloor is a good fit. One important point is that your laminate or vinyl floor should be above 6.5 mm thick in order to prevent telescoping -- which is a process in which the heating elements are “visible” due to a very flexible floor material. Beyond that, most floors approved for floating installation can be installed over ThermoFloor. Give us a call to get a specific consultation today! ThermoFloor is compatible with most any underlayment you would use in an installation, including a pre-attached underlayment like some vinyl floors have.
How do I install ThermoFloor? How does it all get connected?
ThermoFloor functions as an all-in-one underlayment pad and heating system, and your chosen flooring material floats directly over ThermoFloor. Be sure to read the Installation Guidelines before beginning an installation and take advantage of our customer support to help clarify any questions you might have. ThermoFloor mats are then wired to a floor heating thermostat in parallel. The number of mats and layout of the room will affect the exact process of how to wire mats together. Please see the Installation Manual for explicit directions or give us a call anytime.
Will this add height to my floor?
No, ThermoFloor is designed to replace a standard underlayment padding, and therefore will not add height to a floor in relation to a standard installation with non-heated underlayment.
Can I combine more than one ThermoFloor Mat to fit a space?
Most projects involve using more than one mat, but this means that multiple mats are wired in parallel to the thermostat. The thing to remember is that you are not daisy-chaining mats or extending the mats, but rather the mats are working together to cover the appropriate square footage.
Can I cut, shorten, or reshape the system?
We do not warranty mats that are cut, shortened, reshaped, or similarly altered in the field. If you think that you will need to do so, we highly encourage you to call us in order to get some assistance with planning your room layout, or otherwise resolve the situation.
Can I shorten the lead wires?
The lead wires, also known as cold leads because they do not produce heat, can be cut, shortened, or spliced with additional cold lead cable to lengthen them.
What do I do with areas not covered by heating system?
Just fill in those areas with blank (non-heated) underlayment padding! We can provide you with extra underlayment padding that matches the pad used in ThermoFloor to fill in your non-heated areas. Almost every project has a need for filling in some areas with blank padding. Keep in mind, the heating system itself is extremely low profile, so once installed, there will be no height difference between floor material over heated and non-heated areas.
Is the pad used in ThermoFloor any good?
Yes! The underlayment pad that is used in ThermoFloor is one of the best choices you could possibly make for your floating floor. We only use the best components in any of our systems, and the padding used in ThermoFloor is no different, providing superb sound, moisture, and impact control to a floating floor. Click here to see the specifications of the pad itself. We also offer blank padding for your convenience to fill in non-heated areas!
How many watts per square foot does ThermoFloor output?
ThermoFloor produces 8-10 watts per square foot of heating.
How much will it cost to run this system?
The cost to operate is a complicated question to answer, as electrical rates vary by area, insulation of your home, and even by time of day. Additionally, a cost-to-operate is further complicated because the money spent on your radiant heat can result in a net savings on total utilities cost due to reduced use of your traditional HVAC, which is added to by the fact that you will spend less on HVAC system maintenance by relying on electric radiant heat. So, keeping in mind the nuances of describing the operating costs of an electric radiant heat system, just give us a call so we can discuss your applications operating costs.
How hot does ThermoFloor get?
Sometimes, we like to answer a question with a follow-up question. Usually, we are asked about "how hot" a system gets for a couple of reasons, so it is important to understand why you ask? Are you concerned about providing enough heat to adequately warm your space? If so, a properly installed ThermoFloor can provide about 10-15 degrees Fahrenheit of temperature difference above the ambient temperature of the room. In practice, this is more than enough, even in extremely cold climates. We are positive that you will be entirely satisfied with the heat produced by ThermoFloor. Are you concerned about applying too much heat to your chosen floor material? If so, fear not! ThermoFloor is designed to apply heat gently and evenly, due to the nature of the heating elements and the cable spacing pattern that it features. Additionally, because ThermoFloor is designed for flooring materials that might be temperature sensitive, the heat output for ThermoFloor is a reliable 8-10 watts per square foot, which is purposefully lower than what we deliver for tile floors that are not temperature sensitive. You will still enjoy plenty of power to achieve comfortable heat, but it will be a gentle warmup keeping your floors healthy and safe. Lastly, we highly recommend choosing a thermostat that includes a temperature limiter if this is one of your concerns!
How long will ThermoFloor last? How long is the warranty?
ThermoFloor requires no regular maintenance once installed correctly and if left undisturbed (remember your radiant system is down there when planning a remodel!). ThermoFloor heating mats are warrantied for 10 years, but after 17 years being on the market, we have yet to see a ThermoFloor Mat fail due to old age. The thermostats that we offer are warrantied for 3 years because we only use thermostats with GFCI protection which, per national electric code, are recommended to be replaced every 3 years. Replacing a thermostat is simple, easy, and inexpensive.
I’m still confused.
