ThermoTile Case Study with R.O.C.K. Home Remodeling

Heating Tile with R.O.C.K. Home Remodeling Learn how simple it is to install ThermoTile heating mats as a contractor. Location Project Type Product Square Footage Round Lake, IL. Indoor Residential ThermoTile Mats 200 SEE WHAT IT'S LIKE INSTALLING OUR MATS When Leslie moved into her house in Round Lake, Illinois, it seemed like the perfect starter home.  Built around the year 2000, it had good bones but needed some simple updates.  However, after living there for a few months, it became apparent that cold drafts were a result of large windows and sliding glass doors.  To remedy the issue, she opted for ThermoTile mats. Finding the Right Solution R.O.C.K. Home Improvement and Leslie found a way to remedy both the outdated style and improve comfort.  By removing unwanted carpet and plain white tiles in the living room, an opportunity to install a new, modernized floor covering emerged.  Taking up the existing floors revealed a cement subfloor.  The homeowner opted for mock-wood porcelain tile planks.  There was only one choice left: how to heat it. Choosing The Right Heating System Since the floor covering to be installed was porcelain tile, ThermoTile was the right choice.  ThermoTile heating mats and cables are both designed especially with tile in mind (although they can be used universally), as all ThermoTile heating systems are made to support specific floor types.  The installation would also work best with ThermoTile because its installation requires embedding in thin-set mortar and the subfloor was cement. Mats Versus Cables Since ThermoTile comes in both mats and loose cable, the next decision was which application to choose.  Each has its own advantages. For instance, the loose cable allows for a more personalized, flexible layout.  Mats have the cable pre-spaced already which saves time on installation, and are fixed on fiberglass mesh which further strengthens the floor. Ultimately, the homeowner chose ThermoTile mats due to their fast and easy installation. Time to Install Now, all that was left was to install the heating mats, connect the electrical, and lay the tile planks. Ron from R.O.C.K. Home Improvement would handle the floor installation, while a licensed electrician was required for the wiring. Ron got familiar with the floor plan and mat layout then dove into the installation. His findings are below in his own words. Pros Easy to lay out and can be made to fit any area. Duel electrical heat sensors to ensure if one fails the heated floor will still work. Even heating throughout the floor. Plastic tile leveling clips can be used with this product. Cons If the tile is installed directly over the heating element, you need to use a special plastic trowel to ensure the electrical components are not accidentally cut from using traditional metal trowels.  The trowels are also difficult to keep clean. Applying tile directly over the electrical heating element versus pouring self-leveling compound over it makes it somewhat difficult to trowel mortar.  It also adds more time to tile the floor. Overall Thoughts on Installing ThermoTile Mats Suggested install method would be: Pour self-leveliung compound over the heating element first. It gives a smooth, even surface to work on, allowing for an easier install of the tile and eliminates the risk of damaging any part of the heating element. Using the self-leveling compound also helps expedite the overall process however, the additional cost of labor and materials will need to be factored into the homeowner's budget. For Smaller Jobs (Under 100 Sq Ft) One person should be able to handle either install method on their own. Anything over that, I suggest using 2 or more people for either install method. Using the proper trowel size and back buttering every tile is also essential in the proper bond between the floor and tile with any tile installation. Wiring Hooking up the electrical was fast and easy for the electrician.  No previous experience with floor heating systems was required.  The entire process took about twenty minutes, including the installation of the thermostat.  No additional breakers were needed. Use After the installation was complete, Leslie fired the floor heating on via the special floor heating thermostat.  She was careful not to program the system to a high temperature right away and not to change the temperature to more than 3 degrees Fahrenheit at a time. She discovered that even at seventy-two degrees, the system felt much warmer on her feet than expected.  This is due to the way the mats transfer and emit heat.  The energy used to heat the floor is all completely utilized and felt immediately, unlike the existing HVAC system that was not able to keep the room warm enough, even with carpeted floors. Not only does the living room look more polished and modern, but it's also been upgraded to a whole new level of comfort.  Even on the coldest days when snow piles down outside on the patio, her feet are kept warm and she uses less energy through her HVAC system. Leslie also enjoys pre-programmed options available through her thermostat, which allows for designated times that the floor heat kicks on.  This allows her to save considerable amounts of energy since she can turn it off when she is not home or asleep.  She controls the settings right through her mobile phone and gets energy use reports every month. Findings ThermoSoft was able to provide a heating solution that benefited all parties.  Not only did the homeowner get a highly personalized, intelligent floor heating system that uses less energy and costs her less on each utility bill, but the installer got a system that was fast and easy to install. 5 Ways Floor Heat Can Add Value to Your Home
5 Ways Floor Heat Can Add Value to Your Home

Add Value to Your Home Making your home your own oasis with smart investments. ADD VALUE  AND COMFORT TO YOUR HOME For most of us, our home is our biggest investment and we need to be smart about how we invest in it. With these tips, you will discover that there are ways to add value to your home and increase your comfort and joy at the same time. Cashing Out with Radiant Floor Heat Heated floors are not just luxurious add-ons to indulge in for comfort. While toasty toes can be an extra perk in the immediate, installing radiant underfloor heat can offer many benefits and a significant future Return On Investment (ROI). Homes with Upgraded Features Sale Faster According to Remodeling magazine's ""2018 Cost vs. Value Report"", an upscale bathroom remodel which included radiant floor heat yielded an average 56% return (in 2017). This illustrates that radiant heat is a good return on your investment and a smart way to add value to your home for your own enjoyment. Radiant floor heat is becoming not only a luxury but a necessity in today's housing market. Browsing available properties mean sifting through countless online listings. With this over saturation, browsers afford only a few seconds to those listings that catch their eye. What peaks viewer interest? The answer is showcasing its star features, like radiant heat. Zillow Research furthers this point. ""Heated floors / radiant heat"" was the most searched term when looking for homes in New York, NY. Merely including radiant heat in property listings boosted their visibility and desirability to buyers. Homes with heated floors that included that feature in their listings sold 24% above expected values! Why add value to your home with in-floor heating? The benefits of radiant heat flooring are many. Electric in-floor heating systems warm you from the floor up, they are energy-efficient, save you on your utility bills, promote a healthier indoor environment, and eliminate cold spots and cold toes. Read more about 8 Differences Between Radiant Heat and HVAC. Chances are, you know someone who has heated flooring. Over the past few years, the trend of adding this extra feature to floors has skyrocketed. According to the American Institute of Architects Home Design Trends Survey, the popularity of radiant floor heat grew 10% from 2016 to 2017. What caused this sudden surge for heated floors? Realtors attribute this to a few different factors. Since millennials are now dominating the home-buying sector at 34%, tech-friendly homes are more in demand. Controlling floor heat via smartphone is attractive and important to this demographic. Leslie Banker, the co-author of The Pocket Decorator (2004) and The Pocket Renovator (2007), remarks, ""Anytime you're showing a property or listing a property with radiant heating or cooling, be sure to talk it up as a selling point."" Electric In-floor Heating & the Green Movement Additionally, environmental conservation is a definitive social cause among millennials. The “green” movement could be partially responsible for the growing demand for radiant floor heat. Electric underfloor systems boast low EMF and save around 40% of energy over conventional heating systems. Thermostats designed with energy savings in mind can also help you save money and the environment. Read more on those in Choosing A Floor Heating Thermostat 2021.In an online article by The Times, based on Consumer Reports, “…’energy-efficient’ was second only to ‘safe community’ on the list of attributes that would most influence a purchase decision, according to a 2015 survey by the National Association of Home Builders.’” Thinking Ahead by Investing in the Future In this competitive housing climate, trends are important when trying to sell. In this regard, adding electric radiant floor heat can prove wildly advantageous. It is a great opportunity to add value to your home and improve the comfort and efficiency of the home's heating system. Comfort and convenience translate to cash. Not only are you benefiting from the extraordinary comfort that comes with radiant heating, but you are also making a valuable investment in your home and your future. By giving yourself what you want, you are ultimately giving consumers what they want, as well. If you have any questions, contact us today or call us at (800)308-8057 and we can help you add value to your home. Why Your Floor Needs Multi-Zone Radiant Heat
Why Your Floor Needs Multi-Zone Radiant Heat

Introduction Have you ever noticed that it always feels impossible to agree on the temperature inside of a house? It's not just an anecdotal observation. Some individuals have conditions that can make them feel temperatures differently. Yet, for others, the temperature of their home is merely a personal preference. This variation in the perception of heat can be a problem when attempting to set a household temperature that is comfortable for everyone. An electric radiant floor heating system's design allows for individual rooms to be climate controlled. This is something that is nearly impossible to achieve with central air heating. Regardless of the reason for the difference, housemates with varying desires for heat can all be happy with the control offered by this efficient method of warming a home with multi zone radiant floor heating. Get Control of the Situation Traditional forced air systems set the temperature based on the air, which often leaves the floor cold and uncomfortable. WarmStep® electric radiant floor heating systems utilize temperature sensors embedded in the floor, digital thermostats, and data loggers, giving you extreme control over the warmth of your home. Additionally, WarmStep® works with a FidBox® data logger, enhancing your ability to fine-tune energy consumption and monitor historical trends. It offers real-time information on how much energy the electric radiant floor heat system is consuming at any given time. You'll be amazed at how efficient the system is even when your home is nice and warm. Take Care of Your Multi Zone Radiant Floor Heating and Wood Floors Easily Another benefit of precise temperature control is better floor performance. Hardwood floors have relatively strict atmospheric tolerances that they must stay within to avoid issues such as buckling and movement. Engineered wood floors are less susceptible to damage from temperature variations but can still suffer damage from excess humidity just like a hardwood floor. The National Wood Floor Association (NWFA) recommends keeping environmental conditions between 60°F and 80°F year-round. Our thermostats and sensors can be programmed to automatically stay within these limits, while FidBox® will send alerts to your preferred mobile device, guaranteeing that your floors will stay damage-free for years to come. A Variety of Options You may be wondering what system will work best for your home. Your answer depends on your underfloor and flooring type. Homes that feature a concrete foundation slab can benefit from ThermoSlab®. If you plan on installing a wood floor with nails or glue, WarmStep® is the best electric radiant heating option for such flooring. These systems are electrically powered and require no embedding of tubes or pipes into the subfloor. Furthermore, since they are electric, they require no hot water, eliminating the risk of a leak ruining your floors. Conclusion If you want to provide your family with individualized control while also saving energy and preserving your floors, contact ThermoSoft® today. Debunking the Top Myths of Radiant Electric Snow Melting
Debunking the Top Myths of Radiant Electric Snow Melting

Introduction Electric radiant heat systems are becoming a go-to solution for snow and ice management, thanks to their reliability, ease of use, and ability to keep driveways, walkways, and entrances clear of snow and slippery ice. Still, several inaccurate beliefs linger around this technology, causing hesitation among potential users. In this article, ThermoSoft will set the record straight by busting some of the most common myths associated with electric radiant snow and ice melting systems. Salt and Shoveling Are Just as Effective A common myth is that traditional snow removal methods such as shoveling, plowing, or salting, are just as effective as outdoor electric radiant heat. While these methods can be effective in the short term, they require ongoing labor, can damage surfaces over time, and introduce long-term costs. Salt, in particular, can corrode concrete, kill nearby vegetation, and harm pets. Electric radiant heat systems, on the other hand, offer consistent, automated snow and ice melting without physical labor or recurring salt damage. Over time, this convenience and preservation of surfaces make outdoor radiant heating systems a more sustainable and effective long-term solution. Electric Radiant Heating Systems Can Only be Installed During New Construction Some believe that electric snow and ice melting systems are only viable for new construction projects, but this is far from the truth. Retrofitting is a common application, and most electric heating systems are designed to be added to existing driveways, sidewalks, or outdoor steps, if needed. Electric radiant snow melting cables or mats can be embedded in asphalt overlays, beneath pavers, or even in concrete saw cuts. There are also rubberized snow melting mats that can be laid directly on the surface without any construction work. This flexibility makes electric radiant systems an excellent option for homeowners looking to upgrade their current setup without a complete renovation.  Electric Snow and Ice Melting Systems Are Difficult to Repair There is a belief that once an electric radiant system is installed, it becomes impossible, or extremely difficult, to repair. However, most systems are designed with reliability and serviceability in mind. Repairs are often as simple as replacing a cable segment or patching a heating element. Virtually any system can be repaired effectively with the right equipment and knowledge. Electric Radiant Systems Cannot Handle Harsh Weather Some assume that electric snow and ice melting systems won't perform well during heavy snowfalls or extreme cold. In reality, these systems are engineered specifically for such conditions. With properly designed layouts and appropriate smart controllers, electric radiant snow-melt systems can prevent snow accumulation even during the harshest storms. Conclusion Electric snow melting systems are often misunderstood, but when the myths are peeled away, what's left is a reliable, low-maintenance solution that adds safety and convenience to your property. Don't let outdated assumptions hold you back from a clearer, safer winter. For instance, spring installations allow for easier surface preparation, avoiding the challenges of frozen ground and unpredictable winter conditions. Additionally, by planning, you'll avoid the rush of last-minute winter preparations, ensuring a stress-free transition into the colder months. Benefits of Installing NeverFreeze® Snow Melting Mats in Summer and Spring Be Winter-Ready in Advance: Installing your outdoor electrical snow and ice melting system during the warmer months ensures that you're fully prepared before the first snowfall, eliminating the stress of last-minute installation. With heated surfaces ready to function when winter arrives, you can enjoy peace of mind as temperatures begin to drop. Optimal Installation Conditions: Spring and summer provide the best conditions for resurfacing. As such, these seasons provide the perfect opportunity to install snow and ice melting products beneath freshly resurfaced areas. Increased Surface Longevity: If you're already planning to replace your asphalt or concrete, incorporating NeverFreeze® snow melting mats as part of your project can protect your new surface from the damage caused by freeze-thaw cycles, salt, and shoveling. Additionally, without the need for harsh de-icing chemicals, your pavement will last longer, maintaining its appearance.  Enhanced Safety: Slips and falls on icy surfaces are a major winter hazard, leading to potential injuries and liability issues. NeverFreeze® heating mats, if installed and used properly, virtually eliminate snow and ice accumulation, reducing the risk of accidents for your family, employees, or customers. With a clear, dry surface, you'll have safer walkways and driveways all season long.  Energy-Efficient Operation: Designed to activate only when needed, NeverFreeze® electric heating mats detect snow and ice, turning on automatically for efficient, cost-effective snow and ice melting. The system ensures that energy is only used when necessary, keeping costs low while maintaining a clear and safe outdoor space.  Don't Wait, Plan Your Installation Now! How to Create a Floor Plan Like a Pro
How to Create a Floor Plan Like a Pro

Create a Floor Plan Before you begin measuring, start by creating a simple floor plan of the space where you will install your electric underfloor heating. A basic sketch on graph paper or a digital tool will help you map out the area and clearly mark where heating elements will be placed. Be sure to indicate non-heated areas such as built-in furniture, appliances, and fixtures. A well-detailed floor plan helps you visualize the layout and ensures you don't overlook any critical areas during measurement. Measure the Room Dimensions With your floor plan ready, begin measuring the overall dimensions of the room. Start at one corner and work your way across, making sure to capture all details, including alcoves or smaller sections. If your room has an irregular shape, break it down into smaller rectangles, measure each section separately, and then add the areas together to get the total square footage. Double-check your numbers to ensure they match your floor plan. Alternatively, both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store contain apps that can be used to quickly generate a floor plan. Subtract Non-Heated Areas Once you have the total room size, subtract the square footage of any areas where heating cables or mats won't be placed. These include spaces under cabinets, built-in furniture, large appliances, and around bathroom fixtures such as toilets or bathtubs. Additionally, leave a few inches of clearance between the heating elements and the walls to prevent overheating and ensure proper installation. Adjusting for these non-heated areas is essential for ordering the correct amount of heating material and avoiding unnecessary costs. Finalize and Double-Check Measurements After calculating the exact heating area, review your measurements to ensure accuracy. Even a small miscalculation can lead to ordering too much or too little material, which could delay your project. Double-check all dimensions against your floor plan to confirm that everything aligns correctly. If possible, review your calculations with a professional or refer to manufacturer guidelines for installation recommendations. Proper planning at this stage prevents costly mistakes and ensures a smooth installation process. Final Thoughts Properly measuring your floor is a crucial step in ensuring a seamless underfloor heating installation. By following these steps, you can confidently prepare your space and maximize the efficiency of your electric radiant heating system. A little extra effort in planning and measuring now can save time, money, and frustration later. Ready to get started? Why NeverFreeze® Ice and Snow Melting is Perfect for Senior Citizens
Why NeverFreeze® Ice and Snow Melting is Perfect for Senior Citizens

Introduction Winter is a wonderful time of year, but for many homeowners, especially seniors, snow and ice can bring significant challenges. Shoveling snow, spreading salt, and dealing with icy driveways create safety hazards and add time-consuming chores to an already busy time of the year. NeverFreeze snow melting heating cables and mats offer a hassle-free solution that enhances safety and convenience. The Dangers of Snow and Ice for Seniors Slip-and-Fall Accidents Snow and ice accumulation increase the risk of slips and falls, which can lead to serious injuries, especially for seniors. According to the CDC, falls are the leading cause of injury for older adults. Heated driveways melt snow on contact, keeping pathways clear and reducing the risk of dangerous falls.  Shoveling Can Be Hazardous Shoveling snow is physically demanding and can be dangerous for seniors and individuals with health conditions. It increases the risk of heart attacks due to sudden exertion in cold temperatures. A heated driveway eliminates the need for manual snow removal, reducing strain and health risks.  Ice Buildup is Hazardous For seniors, icy driveways can be a major safety concern. Even walking to the car can become dangerous. With a heated driveway, seniors don't have to worry about hidden patches of black ice or unexpected slips.  The Convenience of a Heated Driveway No More Early Morning Shoveling Seniors know how frustrating it is to wake up early and shovel the driveway before starting their day. With NeverFreeze electric snow and ice melting systems, snow begins melting automatically, ensuring a clear path before you even step outside. Easier Emergency Access In the event of a medical emergency, every second counts. Snow-covered driveways can delay emergency responders, making it harder for ambulances or first responders to reach your home. A heated driveway always ensures a clear path, improving access for emergency vehicles and giving families peace of mind during winter storms. More Independence for Seniors For older adults who live independently, winter conditions can make daily tasks like getting the mail, running errands, or driving to appointments difficult and dangerous. A heated driveway ensures that seniors can move freely and safely without relying on others for snow removal, helping them maintain their independence and mobility throughout the winter months. Long-Term Cost Savings and Home Value Reduced Snow Removal Costs Hiring a snow removal service or relying on costly de-icing materials adds up in high expenses over the years. An electrically heated driveway or pass walk is a one-time investment that eliminates recurring winter maintenance costs. Protects Your Driveway and Lawn Rock salt and chemical deicers can damage concrete, asphalt, and landscaping over time. NeverFreeze snow melting cables/mats prevent this damage, meaning your driveway will last longer and your lawn will be safe from harsh chemicals. Increases Property Value A heated driveway is a sought-after upgrade that increases the value of a home, making your property more attractive to potential buyers in the real estate market. Why NeverFreeze Heated Driveways Are the Best Choice At ThermoSoft, we specialize in providing reliable, energy-efficient electrically heated driveway solutions that keep your home safe and winter-ready. Our ice and snow melting systems are easy to install, work with various driveway materials, and can be automated for hands-free snow melting.
