SEE WHAT IT'S LIKE INSTALLING OUR MATS When Leslie moved into her house in Round Lake, Illinois, it seemed like the perfect starter home. Built around the year 2000, it had good bones but needed some simple updates. However, after living there for a few months, it became apparent that cold drafts were a result of large windows and sliding glass doors. To remedy the issue, she opted for ThermoTile mats.
Finding the Right Solution
R.O.C.K. Home Improvement and Leslie found a way to remedy both the outdated style and improve comfort. By removing unwanted carpet and plain white tiles in the living room, an opportunity to install a new, modernized floor covering emerged. Taking up the existing floors revealed a cement subfloor. The homeowner opted for mock-wood porcelain tile planks. There was only one choice left: how to heat it.
Choosing The Right Heating System
Since the floor covering to be installed was porcelain tile, ThermoTile was the right choice. ThermoTile heating mats and cables are both designed especially with tile in mind (although they can be used universally), as all ThermoTile heating systems are made to support specific floor types. The installation would also work best with ThermoTile because its installation requires embedding in thin-set mortar and the subfloor was cement.
Mats Versus Cables
Since ThermoTile comes in both mats and loose cable, the next decision was which application to choose. Each has its own advantages. For instance, the loose cable allows for a more personalized, flexible layout. Mats have the cable pre-spaced already which saves time on installation, and are fixed on fiberglass mesh which further strengthens the floor. Ultimately, the homeowner chose ThermoTile mats due to their fast and easy installation.
Time to Install
Now, all that was left was to install the heating mats, connect the electrical, and lay the tile planks. Ron from R.O.C.K. Home Improvement would handle the floor installation, while a licensed electrician was required for the wiring. Ron got familiar with the floor plan and mat layout then dove into the installation. His findings are below in his own words.
Pros
Easy to lay out and can be made to fit any area.
Duel electrical heat sensors to ensure if one fails the heated floor will still work.
Even heating throughout the floor.
Plastic tile leveling clips can be used with this product.
Cons
If the tile is installed directly over the heating element, you need to use a special plastic trowel to ensure the electrical components are not accidentally cut from using traditional metal trowels. The trowels are also difficult to keep clean.
Applying tile directly over the electrical heating element versus pouring self-leveling compound over it makes it somewhat difficult to trowel mortar. It also adds more time to tile the floor.
Overall Thoughts on Installing ThermoTile Mats
Suggested install method would be: Pour self-leveliung compound over the heating element first. It gives a smooth, even surface to work on, allowing for an easier install of the tile and eliminates the risk of damaging any part of the heating element. Using the self-leveling compound also helps expedite the overall process however, the additional cost of labor and materials will need to be factored into the homeowner's budget.
For Smaller Jobs (Under 100 Sq Ft)
One person should be able to handle either install method on their own. Anything over that, I suggest using 2 or more people for either install method. Using the proper trowel size and back buttering every tile is also essential in the proper bond between the floor and tile with any tile installation.
Wiring
Hooking up the electrical was fast and easy for the electrician. No previous experience with floor heating systems was required. The entire process took about twenty minutes, including the installation of the thermostat. No additional breakers were needed.
Use
After the installation was complete, Leslie fired the floor heating on via the special floor heating thermostat. She was careful not to program the system to a high temperature right away and not to change the temperature to more than 3 degrees Fahrenheit at a time. She discovered that even at seventy-two degrees, the system felt much warmer on her feet than expected. This is due to the way the mats transfer and emit heat. The energy used to heat the floor is all completely utilized and felt immediately, unlike the existing HVAC system that was not able to keep the room warm enough, even with carpeted floors. Not only does the living room look more polished and modern, but it's also been upgraded to a whole new level of comfort. Even on the coldest days when snow piles down outside on the patio, her feet are kept warm and she uses less energy through her HVAC system. Leslie also enjoys pre-programmed options available through her thermostat, which allows for designated times that the floor heat kicks on. This allows her to save considerable amounts of energy since she can turn it off when she is not home or asleep. She controls the settings right through her mobile phone and gets energy use reports every month.
