Winterizing Your Home: A Comprehensive Guide to Ensure Your Comfort and Protection

5 Reasons You Need Roof and Gutter Heat Cables

Read to find out how to prevent cold, wet winter shocks.

MAKE YOUR LIFE EASIER AND SAFER Your home is your castle. It's a great source of joy, comfort, and warmth in the cold months. But if you live in an area with heavy snowfall, your family gathering around the hearth may be interrupted by water pouring through your roof or even a sudden collapse of the roof. The cause of these misfortunes is the accumulation of snow and the formation of ice dams on your roof.

Background: Two Basic Types of Roof and Gutter Heat Systems

    • Radiant heat

Electric roof and gutter heat cables are installed over your roof and in your gutters. After that, electricity running through the cables creates warmth to melt ice, which allows water to flow freely into and through gutters to the ground. All you need are the heat cables, a 120-volt Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter outlet, a controller, an air sensor, and mounting parts. For this reason, a gutter heat cable system is easy to install and operate. Radiant heat is 100% efficient because it uses 100% of the electric energy consumed for heating. Therefore, no other moving parts consume energy.2 Because there are no moving parts, the cost of maintenance is zero. Finally, because they do not use glycol or other chemicals, radiant roof and gutter heat cable systems are environmentally friendly!

    • Hydronic heat

This type uses a heating liquid, typically glycol, circulated through the tubing. So, the heater warms the glycol, then a pump circulates it back and forth through the tubing on the roof. Because it has so many moving parts and complex tubing, it's also more expensive to install, operate and maintain.3 Also, for that reason, it's less energy-efficient than radiant heat. In short, radiant heating has strong advantages over hydronic heating for regular homeowners. As a result, we strongly recommend radiant roof and gutter heating cables for your residence.

    Top 5 Reasons

    1. Prevent damage to roofs, gutters, and interiors caused by ice dams.

It's a matter of physics. Over the winter, snow melts and refreezes. When water refreezes, it expands by 9%.4 So, snow melts, and water seeps under your roofing tiles. After that, it refreezes and expands, pushing the tiles away from the undersurface and into the wood below. Expansion pressure forces the ice into cracks and seams, widening the gaps. Further, the water thaws and flows into the wood structure and ceilings below the roof. Leaks or, worse, an eventual collapse can follow. You might even lose access to affected rooms and suffer damage to electronics and furniture. Subsequent repairs can cost thousands. Moreover, if that doesn't sound bad enough - water in gutters also freezes and expands, which causes gutter joints to burst open. Roof and gutter heat cables attached to your roof melt snow, clearing the way for water to flow down the pitch of the roof as intended. Little water is left to refreeze, and ice dams can't form. Gutter heat cables in the gutters and downspouts further prevent freezing and keep the water flowing.

    2. Reduce the weight load on your roof to prevent structural collapse.

As a rule of thumb, snow weighs 1.25 pounds per inch of depth. The formula for total snow weight is I*1.25*S, where I = inches of snow depth, 1.25 = weight in pounds of one inch of snow, and S = area of roof in square feet. So, a 2,000-square-foot roof with 20 inches of snow on it would carry a load of 20*1.25*2,000, or 50,000 pounds!5 Likewise, accumulated ice only adds to this strain. Year after year of such a strain can eventually lead to catastrophic property damage and financial loss in the dead of winter. Roof and gutter heat cables aid in melting snow and reducing the weight load on your roof, preventing disasters that can leave you in the cold.

    3. Eliminate the danger of falling icicles.

Long, heavy icicles are an accident waiting to happen. As they thaw, they fall from high points on the house. This routinely causes damage to property — icicles can drop on your porch, decorations, or family car. Moreover, they can cause a dangerous and possibly fatal blow to the head or neck.6 Roof heat cables prevent icicle formation by ensuring the flow of water into gutters, and gutter heat cables keep the water flowing down and away. 4. Greater safety than manual snow removal methods.

If you've ever climbed up on your roof with a shovel or snow rake to clear snow from your roof and came down safely, count yourself lucky. You have tempted fate and survived! One slip and fall, and you might have suffered severe injury. Furthermore, even if it were 100% safe, using the wrong tools to clear snow can still heavily damage your roof tiles. Don't take these chances. With roof and gutter heat cables, you'll never have to risk life and limb again! 5. Reasonable installation cost, low to no maintenance expense, and high energy efficiency.

A typical system of radiant roof and gutter heat cables can cost between $445 and $1,2922, depending on the size of the roof. Because such systems are 100% energy efficient, the energy cost to run them ranges from $40 to $70 per month during winter months. Self-regulating systems use sensors and controllers to adjust heat output based on outside temperatures and keep energy usage down. What's more, because there are no moving parts, they require almost no maintenance cost. Considering the risk of loss from water damage, roof collapse, falling icicles or snow-clearing accidents, these are reasonable insurance premiums to pay for peace of mind.
