Embracing Eco-Friendly Practices With Heated Driveways
Snow-covered driveways and icy paths can turn your winter mornings into a chilly ordeal. However, heated driveways have emerged as a convenient solution to these winter woes. While they offer undeniable benefits in terms of safety and convenience, it is also important to explore their environmental and sustainability impacts prior to purchase. Reducing Salt Usage Traditional snow removal methods often involve the use of rock salt, which poses numerous environmental concerns. Excessive salt application can harm nearby vegetation, infiltrate groundwater, and damage aquatic ecosystems when it is washed into rivers and lakes. Heated driveways, by contrast, significantly reduce the need for salt. This not only preserves the environment but also protects your landscape from salt-induced damage. Energy Efficiency One of the primary concerns with heated driveways is their energy consumption. It is true that radiant systems require electricity to operate, but modern technology has made significant strides in improving their energy efficiency. Combining your heated driveway with an aerial snow sensor can help optimize your energy use further. These systems can automatically adjust heat output based on temperature and precipitation, ensuring you are not wasting energy when it is not needed. Longevity and Durability Conventional methods of snow removal, such as shoveling and plowing, can cause wear and tear on your driveway and pavement. This often leads to frequent repairs and replacements, which require additional resources. Snow melting cable, on the other hand, can prolong the lifespan of your driveway and reduce the need for repairs. When properly maintained, these systems can reduce the environmental impact associated with driveway repairs and replacements. Local Environmental Impact The benefits of heated driveways are not limited to just your property. They can also have a positive impact on your local environment. When snow and ice melt on a heated driveway, the runoff is typically cleaner than the slush produced by plowing, due to the usage of salt or sand. This cleaner runoff reduces the pollutants that can enter storm water systems and nearby bodies of water. This leads to a less polluted local environment. Solar-Powered Options For those seeking a more sustainable heating solution, solar-powered heated driveways are available. These systems use energy from the sun to heat your driveway, making them eco-friendly. They can reduce reliance on fossil fuels and help decrease your carbon footprint. While the initial investment for solar-powered systems can be higher, the long-term environmental benefits and potential energy savings can make them an appealing option for eco-conscious homeowners. Consideration of Local Climate The environmental impact of a heated driveway can vary depending on your location and climate. In regions with frequent heavy snowfall, heated driveways may use more energy and have a higher environmental impact than in areas with milder winters. It is essential to assess your specific climate and needs before deciding whether a heated driveway is the right choice for your home. In conclusion, heated driveways offer a range of environmental benefits when compared to traditional snow removal methods. They reduce salt usage, improve energy efficiency, prolong the lifespan of your driveway, and minimize local environmental impacts. When approached with sustainability in mind, heated driveways can be a win-win solution for both your convenience and the environment. The Dos and Don'ts of Heated Floor Installation
Heated floors are a luxurious addition to any home, providing comfort and warmth during the chilly months. Following proper installation steps is crucial to ensuring the safety and efficiency of these systems. In this blog post, we will explore the dos and don'ts of heated floor installation, covering important topics like not connecting rolled mats to power, avoiding voltage mismatches, and the often-overlooked golden rule: read the manual. Do Not Connect the Product While it is Rolled-Up One common mistake in heated floor installation is attempting to connect the mat to electricity while it is still rolled-up. Attempting to connect rolled-up mats can lead to the mats melting, compromising their performance and safety. Therefore, it is critical to always unroll the mats before attaching them to power. Do Not Mix Voltages Across Mats When installing heated floor systems, it is crucial to understand the voltage requirements of your specific product. ThermoSoft® offers two distinct voltages within their mats: 120 volts and 240 volts. Mixing mats with different voltage ratings can lead to disastrous consequences, including the wires overheating and damaging the system. Always ensure that you use compatible components with the same voltage rating throughout your installation. It is a simple rule that can prevent costly mistakes and ensure the safety of your heated floor. Making Sure You Have the Correct Product for Your Application Not all heated floor systems are created equal. There are various types of products designed for specific applications, such as ThermoTile® cable for tile floors or WarmStep® mats for under carpet installations. Choosing the wrong product for your application can lead to increased installation or, in the worst case, reinstallation costs. Before purchasing any heated floor system, thoroughly research and ensure that it is suitable for the type of flooring and intended room size. Do Not Cut the Cable on Your Mats Cutting through the cable on underfloor heating mats can cause several problems. For example, underfloor heating is not self-regulating. Therefore, the product will fail if it is cut. Also, the warranty will be voided. Thus, the customer will be left with an unusable product and no means of replacing it. Read the Manual Perhaps the most important rule in heated floor installations is to read the manufacturer's manual carefully. The manual provides step-by-step instructions tailored to your specific product. It includes essential information on layout, spacing, and thermostat programming. Neglecting to read the manual can result in costly errors and system inefficiencies. Take the time to understand the guidelines to ensure a successful installation. Additional Tips for Successful Heated Floor Installation Plan Your Layout: Before you start installing the heating elements, plan the layout carefully. Test the System: Before covering the heated floor with the final flooring material, test the system to ensure it is functioning correctly. This allows you to identify and resolve any issues before it is too late. Call a Professional: If you are unsure about any aspect of the installation, it is wise to consult a professional with experience in heated floor installations. Installing heated floors is a rewarding project that adds warmth and comfort to your home. However, it is crucial to follow the dos and don'ts outlined in this guide to ensure a safe and efficient installation process. By following these guidelines, you will enjoy the benefits of a cozy and energy-efficient home for years to come. Cost of Hydronic Vs Electric Snow Melting in 2023
A heated driveway system offers a multitude of invaluable benefits. It can save you time, increase your home value, and ensure your safety from dangerous slips and falls. Nevertheless, before making the decision to invest in one of these systems, there are some important questions to address. What is the cost associated with such an installation? Additionally, when choosing between a hydronic or radiant electric system, which one best fits your specific needs? The primary goal of this blog is to provide clear answers to these inquiries, empowering prospective buyers to make well-informed decisions. The Functionality of Hydronic and Electric Radiant Heating Heated driveway systems come in two main varieties: hydronic and electric radiant. Hydronic heated driveways employ a system where hot water is circulated through plastic piping beneath the pavement to effectively melt the snow on the surface. Meanwhile, electric radiant heated driveways use electric mats or cables to generate heat, thus, melting the snow and ice. Hydronic Heating Material Cost To maintain consistency, we will base all the cost comparisons on a fictional 600 square foot driveway. Typically, the cost of hydronic systems includes two main components: the piping which averages between $6 and $20 per square foot, and the cost of pumps, controllers, and sensors, which costs $4,000 for baseline products. This places the upper limit of a hydronic system at $16,000 for materials alone. Electric Radiant Heat Material Cost If you want the entire driveway to be covered in heated mats, you will need seven mats to cover our 600 square foot area. This will bring the cost for electric radiant mats to $5,512. The basic heat controller, ground temperature sensor, and air temperature sensor will cost another $1,458, putting your system total before labor to $6,940. Monthly Cost of Hydronic, Electric Radiant, and Hired Removal Depending on a variety of external factors, a radiant heated driveway will cost between $26 and $100 per month for our hypothetical driveway. Meanwhile, a hydronic system will cost $35 to $88 to heat the same space over a similar timeframe. Compare either of these options to a snow removal service, which can cost up to $75 per visit and it becomes evident that any underground heating unit is a more cost-effective option. Final Cost Comparison The total cost for an electric radiant heated driveway is far less than that of a hydronic heated driveway. To completely cover our 600 square foot area, we are looking at a pre-labor cost of $6,940 for electric radiant. Alternatively, an equivalent system utilizing hydronics can cost up to $16,000. This translates to more than $9000 in savings by choosing an electric system over a hydronic. Let us help you find the best snow removal option for you. 6 Differences Between Vinyl and Laminate Flooring
Introduction Vinyl and laminate flooring are popular for homeowners seeking durable and cost-effective options. While they share some similarities, there are distinct differences in composition, appearance, installation, and maintenance. Here is a closer look at the two options to help you decide which is appropriate for your circumstances. 1. Appearance Differences Vinyl flooring offers a wide range of design options. It can replicate the look of various materials, such as hardwood, stone, or tile, through high-quality printing technology. Planks or tiles have realistic patterns and textures, delivering an authentic and affordable aesthetic that works with virtually any décor. Laminate flooring also comes in various designs and patterns, but it primarily imitates hardwood flooring. The printed image layer in laminate flooring can closely resemble different wood species, offering a warm and natural appearance. 2. Durability Differences Vinyl and laminate flooring are known for their durability. Vinyl flooring is highly resistant to moisture, making it suitable for areas prone to spills and humidity, such as kitchens and bathrooms. It comes with a wear layer on top, which serves as a protective coating. Laminate flooring is relatively resistant to scratches, fading, and stains, but less resistant to moisture than vinyl. Prolonged exposure to water can cause it to swell or warp, so installs near bathrooms and kitchens are often not recommended. 3. Installation Differences Vinyl flooring offers flexible installation options. It can be installed as sheets, tiles, or planks and often glued down, loose-laid, or interlocked with a click-and-lock system. It is generally easier to install than laminate. Most laminate flooring uses a click-and-lock system for installation, allowing for a floating floor. An expansion gap around the edges is generally recommended to manage expansion and contraction needs. 4. Maintenance Differences Vinyl flooring is a relatively low-maintenance product. It can be easily cleaned with regular sweeping and occasional mopping using mild cleaners since it is highly resistant to stains and requires no refinishing or sealing. Laminate flooring also requires minimal maintenance, but it is more susceptible to scratches and damage from excessive moisture. It helps to use protective pads on furniture legs to avoid damage. 5. Cost Differences Vinyl and laminate flooring are budget-friendly compared to hardwood or stone materials. Vinyl tends to be a little cheaper than laminate, especially when comparing products on the lower end of the quality spectrum. The price can vary based on factors such as the flooring's thickness, quality, and design. 6. Floor Heating System Differences We recommend using our WarmStep® floor heating system if you have a vinyl floor. For laminate, we recommend our ThermoFloor® system. It offers a built-in underlayment pad, which is required whenever heating laminate is an upgrade priority. Conclusion Heating vinyl or laminate floors are affordable options that deliver a luxurious experience for homes of any size. You can eliminate cold spots and chilly areas while enjoying a higher energy-efficiency rating than most other systems. Protect Your Roof and Gutter from Ice Dams: The Unseen Threats of Winter
With the turning of the seasons, now is the last opportunity to protect your roof from the unseen terrors of winter, primarily ice dams. Throughout the course of this article, we will discuss the risks of ice dams and a variety of short-term and long-term solutions to keep your home safe. What is an Ice Dam? Ice dams occur when a gutter is unable to drain properly due to frigid temperatures. The resulting effect is an ice blockage, otherwise known as an ice dam, preventing additional melt-off from accessing drainage points. With no place left to go, this run-off can leak into your home, causing catastrophic damage to its interior. What Can be Done to Fix Ice Dams That Have Already Formed? Unfortunately, by the time that most individuals realize that an ice dam has formed in their gutters, it is already too late. At this point, the only solution is mitigating the damage through snow removal. This is most often achieved via broom, snow blower, or shovel. Of course, this solution only lasts as long as there isn't snowfall. Once more snow accumulates, the process of snow removal, as well as the threat of ice dams, will begin anew. What Can be Done to Proactively Prevent Ice Dams From Forming? The most effective ice dam prevention technique is to stymie the water's ability to freeze. The easiest way to accomplish this is via gutter heating cables. While there are several methods to prevent ice dams, the majority of these solutions can only be implemented at the time of construction. However, ThermoSoft's NeverFreeze roofing and gutter cable can be installed at any point in time. If ice dams are a worry in for your home, please give us a call at 800-308-8057 and speak to a member of our U.S. based support team Leslie Banker: Perks of Radiant Heat Article: Boost Home Value Article: ""2018 Cost vs. Value Report"" Why ThermoSoft's Floor Heating Systems are the Answer For You With these benefits in mind, where can you add comfort and value at the same time? Protect Your Wood Flooring with the Floor Sentry®
Expansion and Contraction As an organic material, wood has the properties of attracting and storing water molecules at room temperature. Because of these tendencies, wood will expand or contract in an attempt to match the relative humidity of the room. This expansion and contraction can in some cases present a threat to the longevity of the flooring. This is why it is important to maintain conditions that are suitable for wood flooring. With the help of dataloggers such as the Floor Sentry®, homeowners can greatly extend the life of their wood flooring. Wood Floor Components Your natural, wood-based floor is part of an overall system that consists of (1) the finished floor itself, (2) the subfloor that the flooring is installed over, (3) the ambient environment above the flooring (the inside environment of the room or building), and (4) the environment that the underside of the subfloor is exposed to (typically, a crawl space or concrete slab foundation). Threats to Your Flooring Wood flooring may be at risk of damage or catastrophic failure if exposed to unfriendly ambient conditions. This unwanted exposure can occur either from inside your home or building or from the underside of the flooring (what is often called the subfloor). If ambient conditions, primarily temperature and RH, go beyond safe limits for extended periods of time, significant damage to your wood flooring may occur. Types of damage may include cupping, splitting, crowning, etc. The Floor Sentry's purpose is to help prevent these serious wood flooring issues. What is the Floor Sentry? The Floor Sentry monitors the temperature and relative humidity (RH) of your wood flooring and your underlayment or subfloor. It serves as a data logging device that creates a historical record of temperature and RH. If either the temperature or the RH falls outside the desired range for proper floor care, the Floor Sentry alerts you by automatically delivering notifications wirelessly to your mobile device. Just like your mobile device, the Floor Sentry is Bluetooth-equipped, so you must be within Bluetooth® range to receive Floor Sentry notifications for either temperature or RH-related issues Installation of the Floor Sentry Create a space for the Floor Sentry in the underside of the wood floor plank using a router or similar device. Use the included template card to determine the correct cavity size and depth. Remove the release paper covering the butyl seal on the Floor Sentry and apply the device so that the butyl seal bonds with the wood inside of the cavity. Using the Floor Sentry Download the free Wagner Sentry app from either the Apple App Store or Google Play. Once downloaded, you can begin monitoring the temperature and RH in your flooring. You can also set alarm thresholds to capture spikes and begin receiving notifications for unfavorable conditions. Once installed the, the Floor Sentry will give you around 8 years of constant temperature and RH monitoring Heating Wood Flooring If you're looking to take your flooring to the next level, consider heated wood floors. Experience the comfort of warm wood floors with the WarmStep® electric heating system. WarmStep is a 100% green heating solution, that unlike gas furnaces, has no negative impact on the environment. Since heat is distributed evenly from the floor, it provides a feeling of comfort at lower temperatures which reduces energy consumption. WarmStep mats have a tailored heat output of 8-10 W/ft² to safely heat wood flooring. The system is controlled by a floor heating thermostat with a wood floor heating setting designed to keep floor temperatures in an optimal range. As with any wood flooring installation, we strongly recommend using a datalogger such as the Floor Sentry (available through ThermoSoft) for additional protection. For more information, read the following blog "The Future of Floor Heating is Here-WarmStep". Wrap Up Whether or not you choose to heat your wood flooring, you should always install a datalogger to alert you to potential harmful conditions. The Floor Sentry not only monitors and sends alerts but also creates a historical record for future reference. The Wagner Sentry app allows you to set thresholds and receive alerts directly from your mobile device. Enjoy the peace of mind that your flooring is protected with the Floor Sentry. HVAC Costs: How Electric Floor Heat Can Help
Increasing Natural Gas Prices Over the 2022-2023 winter season, homeowners across the U.S. experienced an unpleasant increase in their monthly heating bill. Some saw their bill rise an astounding 28% due to the rising costs of natural gas. Many homeowners may be hit by another unwanted expense due to a regulation recently proposed by the Department of Energy. New Regulations The regulation would place restrictions on gas furnaces available on the market to homeowners. They would be required to meet an annual 95% fuel utilization efficiency standard, while the previous expectation was only 80%. Only two out of every five furnaces shipped today in the United States currently meet the standards set by the Biden Administration. If this regulation passes, manufacturers would be mandated to discontinue production of inefficient non-condensing furnaces and produce newer efficient condensing furnaces. When the time comes for homeowners to replace their old unit, they would face hefty installation costs to install the condensing furnaces due to the additional retrofits they require to operate. How Much Pollution Does a Traditional HVAC System Create? A traditional heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system contributes to pollution in several ways, although the extent of the impact depends on a few factors. A well-maintained system typically has a lower influence on the environment than one requiring repair. The average home in the U.S. with a natural gas furnace creates about 6,400 pounds of carbon dioxide per year. That figure can increase significantly for those living in a northern state where the winters are colder. In warmer states, home-based HVAC systems still contribute about 6,600 pounds of carbon dioxide to the environment annually from air conditioning use. Although homeowners can reduce emissions by adjusting their thermostats to have their furnaces or air conditioners operate less often, the gains are minimal. You will save 120 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions for every degree you sacrifice. Radiant Floor Heat Is a Viable Alternative Electric infloor heat is an environmentally friendly alternative to HVAC systems that will decrease your reliance on natural gas. These radiant heat systems deliver a 100% green heating solution, that unlike gas furnaces, has no negative impact on the environment. Energy Efficient Since heat is distributed evenly from the floor, it can provide comfortable warmth while consuming less energy, especially with zoned heating. This feature allows you to heat specific areas without wasting energy on unused spaces. It also allows you to heat the lower portion of the room where you are. Since you are in direct contact with the heat, you can achieve comfort at a lower temperature than with forced air heat. Allergen Free Unlike forced-air HVAC, electric infloor heating doesn't require ducts to distribute heated or cooled air. Top Benefits of Owning a Snow Melting System
Why Install an Inground Snow Melting System? With the winter season comes a variety of challenges, some of which pose a serious threat to our safety.Thankfully, a quality snow melting system can eliminate many of these risks providing safety and peace of mind to homeowners. In this article, we will highlight the main benefits of snow melting and provide a brief introduction to the different inground systems available today. Save Time and Money on Snow Removal The first and most obvious benefit they offer is of course taking care of the snow and ice removal for you. This can either eliminate time consuming shoveling or save you money that would have otherwise been spent on a snow removal service. Today the national average to hire a snow removal company is between $25 and $75 per hour which can add up. Investing in snow melting system is a one-time expense that will save you a considerable amount of money over the years. Avoid the Dangers of Snow Removal The act of snow removal itself sends over 11,000 Americans to the hospital each year with a variety of health conditions. Some of the most common conditions are frostbite, hypothermia, back injuries, broken bones and heart problems. Eliminate the Damages of Snow Removal Snow removal can actually damage your driveways and walkways. Untrained plow operators can wreak havoc on your driveway by putting the plow in direct contact with concrete or asphalt. This is especially true if the plow doesn't have a soft edge putting metal in direct contact with the driveway surface. The usage of salt to melt snow can also cause damage to your concrete or asphalt over time. Also, when salt enters your home on the bottoms of your shoes, it can act like sandpaper leaving small scratches on any flooring surface. Even the grout between your tiles can become cracked by salt when stepped on the wrong way.It can also pose a threat to our lawns and gardens. Melt Snow and Ice Before it Accumulates With slip-and-fall accidents being - leading cause of emergency room visits, it's important to minimize the potential for accidents. With a snow melting system, you can prevent patches of ice and slippery snow accumulations from forming for added safety. Types of Snow Melting Systems NeverFreeze® snow melting mats are often chosen due to their ease of installation. Since the mats come with factory pre-spaced cables, it saves time on measuring and cuts down on the amount of securement points to the ground. The mats are available with both 4- and 5-inch cable spacing. The closer the cable spacing, the more heat will be distributed per square foot for increased melting power. NeverFreeze® snow melting cable is preferable when heating large spaces with long runs. It also offers a more flexible installation, accommodating spaces of all shapes and sizes and has a lower price point than the mats. NeverFreeze cables are optimized to deliver the same heat output while providing 30% more coverage than competing snow melting cables. Less cable translates to a lower project cost and fewer cable securement points resulting in an easier installation. Conclusion There are many reasons to invest in a snow melting system. They eliminate the need for manual snow removal. By doing so you avoid the dangers related to snow removal and the damaging effects to surfaces and vegetation. WarmStep® Wood Floor Heating Q&A
Heating Your Wood Flooring When the topic of floor heat is mentioned, most people would immediately think of heated tile. The concept of heating wood floors is somewhat newer and therefore less understood. Today more and more home owners are choosing to warm the wood flooring in their kitchens, living rooms, and foyers with electric floor heating systems such as WarmStep®. As we talk to customers, we receive a wide variety of questions but have noticed some common themes. We wanted to take this opportunity to address the TOP 5 QUESTIONS we receive about our WarmStep in-floor heating system. What Flooring Materials is WarmStep Compatible With? WarmStep is an extremely versatile system that can be used with a wide variety of flooring materials. Although the system was designed primarily for heating wood flooring, it can also be used to warm laminate, and rigid vinyl (SPC and WPC) flooring coverings. As for subfloors, it can be installed on top of plywood, OSB, cement, and concrete. What Installation Methods is WarmStep Compatible With? Flooring can be glued, nailed, or even floated with the WarmStep system. Notably, it is the only product of its kind approved by the National Wood Flooring Association for direct installation with hardwood and engineered wood floors. This means that you do not need to embed the system in a mortar or self-leveler. This makes for a much quicker installation and cuts down on materials. Are There Any Safeguards in Place to Protect My Wood Flooring? Absolutely! The WarmStep system was designed specifically for safely heating wood flooring. Distributing a gentle and even heat output of 6 Watts per ft2, the system protects your wood flooring from fast temperature fluctuations. Also, the mats heating cables act as a thermal fuse which safely power down the system in the event of overheating. WarmStep mats are always paired with a floor heating thermostat that communicates with an in-floor temperature sensor for precise control. The thermostat allows users to set a maximum temperature limit for added protection. They also include a wood floor heating setting to maintain an optimum range. As with any wood flooring installation, we recommend installing an in-floor datalogger (available through ThermoSoft) that records the relative humidity and temperature of the flooring environment. This alerts homeowners to issues in real time so corrective actions can be taken immediately. What Happens if the Heating Cable Were to Become Damaged? First, we must point out that this situation is extremely rare. However, we do have safeguards in place to help you through any issues that may arise. Prior to installation, each mat's resistance must be verified and recorded. Perform a second test prior to installing your flooring to verify there has been no change in the resistance readings. In addition, we highly recommend using an InstAlarm Pro (also available through ThermoSoft) during installation. If any changes in resistance occur, the alarm will sound alerting you to a potential issue. Field repair options are also available through ThermoSoft. Once you have received the materials needed to perform the repair, a member of our technical support team will guide you through the restoration. How do you Connect the Mats Together? There is no need to hook the mats together. We carry mats of varying sizes ranging from 1.5-3 feet wide and 3-24 feet in length. Each mat is connected directly to your floor heating thermostat. Each thermostat can supply up to 15 amps. If you are heating a large room requiring a combination of mats exceeding 15 amps we have options available to expand your capacity. Any More Questions? We realize this can be a lot to take in if you are new to floor heating. Thankfully our floor heating specialists are here to help.
