Electric Heat Cheat Sheet for Wood Flooring in 2023
Electric Heat Cheat Sheet for Wood Flooring in 2023

Wood Flooring is the First Choice for Many Homeowners Who doesn't want a gorgeous wood floor in their home? The classic styling, luxurious look, and solid feel homeowners can enjoy for a lifetime. But when the temperature drops outside, a wood floor can become cold and uncomfortable. Turning up the forced air heat in most homes will get a room warmer but at the expense of wasted energy, noise, irritating dryness, and floors that remain cold. More and more homeowners are turning to electric floor heat to eliminate these issues.  Wood Floor Heating Systems Prior to recent technological advances, installing electric heat under wood was a touchy subject due to its complexity. ThermoSoft's products adhere to the latest NWFA guidelines and enable easier, faster, and safer heating under hardwood surfaces. Electric heat by ThermoSoft is the smart choice for floor heating. Our systems utilize the latest technology and are rugged, reliable, and effective. Installing a radiant heat system under your wood floor is a simple process. It can be done in less than a day and without any special skills or tools. Let's take a look at how easy it is installing radiant heat under wood with our WarmStep® system. Laying the Ground Work The first step is to create a layout plan. Spending a little bit of time determining how to position your electric heat system and its dimensions will save a lot of time later. The first thing you will need to do is take measurements of the area you wish to heat. Areas with permanent fixtures such as counters and large appliances such as a refrigerator should not be included as you will not be heating these areas. Now that you know the amount of square footage, you can select the combination of mat sizes that will fit your space. You can do this yourself or have ThermoSoft help by creating a layout for each room. Our floor heating specialists are available to help you from planning through project completion. Underlayments and Vapor Barriers When installing the WarmStep® system, depending on the subfloor, you may need to lay an underlayment over the subfloor. The underlayment ensures that the radiant heat system does not project heat into the subfloor or foundation. This reduces the amount of energy required by directing the majority of the energy upwards into the room, rather than down into the ground. You may also want to install a vapor barrier if installing over a concrete floor to ensure your flooring doesn't become damaged by moisture. In Floor Temperature Sensor Once the system is in place, the next step is to install the floor temperature sensor which communicates the floor temperature to your thermostat. It is important to keep the temperature of the floor below 80 degrees per the recommended NWFA guidelines. The sensors have a 15-foot lead wire for long range connection to your thermostat. Thermostats Your thermostat's lead wires will need to be run to your electrical box. Always seek the help of a licensed electrician to make these connections. The thermostat is critical to the proper operation of your electric heat system because it regulates how warm your room will be and how much power the floor heating system will consume. Flooring Installation At this point, all that remains is to install your flooring on top of the electric heating system. Flooring can be floated, glued, or nailed down. Once installed, make sure to learn how to maintain your heated floors to ensure that you can enjoy them for a lifetime. Read the following article, "Maintaining Heated Wood Floors" for more information. Installing Wood Flooring Over Radiant Heat In 2023
Installing Wood Flooring Over Radiant Heat In 2023

INSTALLING WOOD OVER ELECTRIC RADIANT HEAT Installing a nail or glue down wood floor over radiant heat is easier than you might think. However, it's important to choose the right materials and follow the best practices recommended by the NWFA as well as the flooring and fastening manufacturers. Laying the Groundwork Before you get started, it's important to plan for this project. You should consider installing a humidification system to maintain the right moisture levels anytime you have wood floors regardless of whether or not you have floor heating. HVAC humidifiers are very popular today because they will humidify your entire home and are low maintenance. The average cost for a HVAC humidifier ranges from $100-$300. If you are hiring out to have one installed it can run from $395-$734 on average. The Importance of a Data Logger Radiant heating floor systems work better and last longer when the end-user maintains the right conditions in terms of temperature and humidity. When you're planning to install one of these systems, the NWFA strongly recommends you incorporate a data logger. A data logger will provide the homeowner with real-time information about the humidity and temperature of the flooring, alerting them to unfavorable conditions before any damage is caused. Different Types of Systems When installing a nail or glue down wood floor over radiant heat, it's important to adapt the materials and methods used to the type of system you're installing. You'll run into three main types of electric heating systems: Embedded systems. Direct contact systems. Systems that you install under or between the floor joists. Direct contact systems are usually faster and cheaper to install because you can glue or nail down the floor over the heating mats. However, not all direct contact systems allow for this installation method. If you're installing a polymer or metal foil system, you'll have no choice but to use a floating floor. You can use the nail and glue down method with low-voltage fabric heating mats such as ThermoSoft  WarmStep mats which has built in thermal cutoffs for added safety. With a floor heating system like this, there's no need to use self-levelers or mortar. Because you do not have to wait for cement to dry you can install the mats the same day as the flooring. Installing a Nail and Glue Down Wood Floor Over Radiant Heat Start by checking any specifications from both the flooring and the radiant heating system manufacturer. Make sure to follow the proper nailing schedule. Failure to do so often results in noises or gapping.A You should also recommend the right type of wood floor. Most manufacturers advise against exotic woods, hickory, or beech since these species are less stable. How to Nail Flooring Over a Radiant Heat System Nailing down flooring over heating elements is a simple process: Prep the subfloor before you get started. Clean the surface and make sure it's flat and has a normal moisture content. Apply adhesive where each mat ends and begins. You should cover a 5-inch strip to glue the mats to the subfloor. Place a section of the wood flooring perpendicular to the heating elements. Secure the wood flooring with a cleat or staple following the manufacturer's nailing schedule and making sure you install fasteners at least 1/4 inch away from heating elements and wires. Once you get to the 5-inch border where you used the flooring adhesive, apply additional adhesive on the surface of the heating mats (to secure it to the flooring above) instead of fasteners to avoid damaging the heating elements. How to Glue Down Flooring Over a Radiant Heat System Depending on the manufacturer's specifications, you can use an adhesive instead of nailing down the flooring. Working in sections, secure the heating mats to the subfloor with adhesive. Next cover the surface of the heating mats with adhesive and place the flooring over it. If you decide to use the nail-glue assist method, make sure you glue the flooring perpendicular to the heating elements and follow the manufacturer's nailing schedule. 2023 Floor Heat Cheat Sheet- ThermoTile® Mats
2023 Floor Heat Cheat Sheet- ThermoTile® Mats

Installing In-Floor Electric Heating Mats Looking for an easy to install floor heating system for your tile or stone flooring? ThermoTile® electric in-floor heating mats are perfect for installation under ceramic tile and natural stone. They are also compatible with a variety of other flooring types such as hardwood, engineered wood, vinyl, and carpet. ThermoTile mats are securely embedded in concrete so it's important to get the job done right the first time. In this article, we go over the materials, tools and basic instructions to ensure your ThermoTile floor heating system is installed correctly. Let's start by first taking a look at the materials and components required for this installation.  Floor Heating Thermostat You will need a floor heating thermostat to adjust the level of heat produced by your mats. Each thermostat includes an in-floor heat sensor that communicates the floor temperature to the thermostat. The majority of our thermostats also come with built in GFCI protection which provides protection from electrical shocks. A If you are looking for a programmable thermostat, we would recommend the OJ Touch Screen (UDG4-4999). If you would like to control your floor heat remotely, the OJ Wi-Fi Enabled Touch Screen (UWG4-4999) would be the thermostat for you. Power Module If you plan to use a single thermostat to control multiple mats with a combined amp draw of over 15 amps, you will need an OJ Power Module which provides additional power. A  The power module works with any OJ touchscreen thermostat and is compatible with both 120V and 240V systems. Electric Box and Conduit A 1-gang (2 inch wide) or 2-gang (4 inch wide) electrical box and mud ring are needed to mount your thermostat. We recommend a 4-inch box because it provides additional room to connect multiple leads. Install ½” minimum conduit from the bottom plate up to the electrical box. Install ½” conduit if necessary to make room for more lead wires when using multiple ThermoTile® heating mats. Thin-Set & Self-Leveling Cement Since ThermoTile mats are embedded in concrete, the system is always protected from being damaged after installation. The mats can either be embedded in a thin-set mortar, or a self-leveling cement. The choice of which to use depends on type of subfloor and flooring material being installed. Self-leveling mortar is the most appropriate for flooring types that require a perfectly level subfloor such as vinyl, laminate, or carpet floor which is susceptible to showing unevenness. If installing floor heat under tile or stone flooring, we would recommend using thin-set also known as modified Portland cement mortar. What Tools are Needed to Installation? Scissors:A Use to cut and shape the mesh on ThermoTile Mats. Digital Multimeter: Needed to verify the resistance of each ThermoTile mat throughout the installation process. InstAlarm: Monitors for faults during the installation process. Hot Glue Gun, Tape or Staple Gun: Needed to fasten mats to the sub-floor. Plastic Trowel: Needed to spread mortar over the mats. Install Preparation Measure the area you wish to heat and calculate the total square feet. Exclude areas where permanent fixtures like toilets, sinks, and bathtubs will be located. Contact one of our floor heating specialists to help select the right combination of mats for your area. Once you have your ThermoTile mats, tools, and all other required materials you can begin your installation. Electrical Rough-In Each mat comes with 10-foot leads and each floor sensor has a 15-foot lead.A  When installing your electrical box, make sure that your lead wires and floor sensor will be in reach of the box. Run your conduit from your electrical box to your bottom plate. You will need one conduit to run your lead wires and another to run your floor sensor. Mat Installation Begin laying your mats making sure to stay 4-6 inches away from the ring of a toilet and approximately 3 inches away from the side of any walls. The mat's mesh can be cut and turned to fit any room shape. When cutting the mesh, it's critically important to avoid cutting the heating cables. The cable can be positioned loosely (separate from the mat) if necessary to go around permanent fixtures. Once in place, fasten the mats to the subfloor. Place floor sensor equally between the mat's heating cables. Embed the mats in either a thin-set or self-leveling cement. Once your cement has fully hardened, you can install your floor covering of choice. The above steps provide a basic installation overview, please refer to the full Installation Guidelines or contact us to go over a more detailed installation plan. You can also schedule a live one-on-one video call with us from your smartphone for assistance. Final Thoughts ThermoTile mats are compatible with a wide variety of flooring materials and are easy to install. The Future of Floor Heating is Here- WarmStep®
The Future of Floor Heating is Here- WarmStep®

A Sneak Peek into the Future of Floor Heating The thought of installing heated wood floors can be a daunting one for homeowners. And with the complex nature of many floor heating systems, it's easy to understand why. That is exactly where the WarmStep electric floor heating system comes into play: it's a safe, reliable, and much simpler to install when compared to other floor heating systems. If you are looking to install in-floor heat in your home, continue reading to find out why the WarmStep system is perfect for your home.  1. Easy Install Traditional floor heating systems need to be embedded into cement or mortar which requires a great deal of labor, materials, and extra cost. Fortunately, WarmStep doesn't require embedment and can be in direct contact with your flooring. Since you don’t have to wait overnight for your cement to dry, this system can be installed the same day as the flooring. 2. Has a Shut-Off Feature for Increase Safety One concern that many homeowners have about electric floor heating is safety. WarmStep uses a unique technology called FiberThermics that has a built-in shut-off feature that is activated if the heating wires were to get too hot. These wires are also extremely flexible making them virtually unbreakable. When you choose WarmStep, you gain peace of mind knowing you have chosen a safe high-quality system that will last the lifetime of your home. 3. Compatible with a Variety of Flooring Types Some in-floor heating systems simply aren't compatible with certain types of flooring. The WarmStep system is compatible with engineered wood, laminate flooring, vinyl flooring, and traditional hardwood. It is also compatible with most types of subfloors, vapor barriers and underlayments. 4. Compatible with a Variety of Installation Methods WarmStep is also compatible with multiple installation methods. Flooring can be glued, nailed, or even floated with this system. Notably, WarmStep is the only product of its kind approved by the National Wood Flooring Association for direct installation with hardwood and engineered wood floors. 5. Efficient and Practical Did you know that WarmStep is controlled with a thermostat, just like an HVAC system? WarmStep uses a heating sensor underneath the floor to ensure that it's at just the right temperature to keep you warm and comfortable. If paired with a programmable thermostat such as the OJ Touch Screen Thermostat, you can schedule your floor heat to run only when you are home to enjoy it. You can also adjust your floor heat when you are on the go if you upgrade to the OJ Wi-Fi Enabled Touch Screen Thermostat. 6. Will Not Raise Your Floor Height Unlike other radiant floor heating systems consisting of water pipes or thick cables, WarmStep is lightweight, thin, and designed to keep your floor height consistent from room to room. These in-floor heating mats are only 1/16 of an inch thick and therefore will not create trip hazards when walking from one room to the next. 7. Protects Your Flooring Wood flooring can become damaged by humidity and quick temperature changes which can cause undesirable warping. Luckily, WarmStep pairs with a device known as a FidBox® that monitors these levels and sends an alert if the conditions are out of range. The FidBox is installed beneath your flooring and will send a message directly to your mobile device to alert you if action is required to protect your flooring. The Wrap-Up The future of floor heating has arrived, and it is WarmStep. Watch the video below for a brief introduction to this unique electric floor heating system. Learn what ThermoTile® Floor Heating Can Add to Your Home
Learn what ThermoTile® Floor Heating Can Add to Your Home

Enjoy Warm Tile Flooring Considering adding the soothing warmth of heated floors to your home? If so, look no further. ThermoTile is a superior in-floor heating system that is perfect for heating tile and stone. It is also compatible with a variety of other flooring types such as wood, engineered wood, vinyl, and carpet. But what is ThermoTile exactly and what benefits should you know about? Let's take a closer look at this electric floor heating system. What Exactly is ThermoTile Heated Floor System? ThermoSoft is a radiant heat technology company that provides safe, reliable, and efficient heated floor systems. ThermoTile is one such system that uses electrically powered heating cables designed to be embedded in mortar or cement. This system is available in loose cable form or in mat form, each offering their own benefits. Let's take a look at each of these options to determine which is right for you.  ThermoTile Mats This system is the easiest to install and offers a degree of flexibility as the mesh in each ThermoTile mat can be carefully cut (avoiding the heating cable), and turned to fit the shape your room. Since the mat comes with evenly distributed pre-spaced cables, you will save time on measuring and attaching cables to the subfloor. Simply roll out the mats and plug them into your thermostat.  ThermoTile Cable The ThermoTile cable comes in a roll of loose cable which accommodates areas of ANY size and shape. This is the best option for irregular shaped rooms and spaces with many permanent fixtures to work around. This system is budget-friendly and more flexible than the mats given the nature of the loose cable design. The cables can be arranged and secured to the ground with our FixFast hold down straps as needed. Installation does however take a bit longer due the measuring and placement of the cables.  ThermoTile Cable with Membrane You can speed up the installation of ThermoTile cable by pairing it with an uncoupling membrane. This is a lightweight and durable polyethylene sheet with evenly spaced studs which provide a channel to run your cable. The membrane is secured to the subfloor. The cable is then snapped into place between the studs without the need for clips or fasteners. Uncoupling membranes are highly recommended when installing tile since they offer protection from both tile and grout cracking. They also provide vapor management, waterproofing, soundproofing and a thermal break that reduces the time it takes to heat up your floors. ThermoSoft offers three types of membranes, Schluter DITRA-HEAT®, Prodeso®, and Prova FLEX-HEAT®. Speak to a member of our team to decide which is best for your application. Now, let’s take a look at some of the benefits this system has to offer. Superior Performance and Healthy Air A ThermoTile heated floor system gently heats the room and decreases your usage of forced air systems that spread dust and allergens throughout your home. The evenly spaced cables provide a consistent temperature reducing drafts and concentrating heat lower in the room where you need it. Unlike forced air systems that are noisy when cycling on and off, ThermoTile is completely silent. Strengthen the Floor Each ThermoTile mat consists of a durable fibreglass mesh which was engineered to keep the cable flat to the ground. These mats actually strengthen the floor and the same is true for the ThermoTile cable when installed with a membrane. And in case you are wondering, ThermoTile is backed by a lifetime limited warranty providing peace of mind. 100% Efficient & Maintenance Free The ThermoTile electric floor heating system converts 100% of energy into heat. This efficiency is simply unmatched by both HVAC systems and hydronic floor heating systems. And because the system doesn't have any moving parts or filters to replace, there is no maintenance required! This saves you money on costly repairs and frees up time that can be better spent elsewhere. Final Thoughts The ThermoTile in-floor heating system is compatible with most flooring materials. While the mats offer ease of installation, loose cable is considered the “budget friendly” option with greater flexibility. When cable is installed on a membrane, it can speed up installation and increase the life of your flooring. Cost to Run Bathroom Underfloor Heating in 2022
Cost to Run Bathroom Underfloor Heating in 2022

Heat Your Bathroom for Less than a Dollar Per Day! Uncovering the Cost to Run In-floor Electric Heat in Your Bathroom Many people have experienced the comfort of underfloor heating at a friend or relatives house and have seriously considered installing an in-floor heating system in their own home. But as consumers we must always ask ourselves, How much will this cost? It is easy to find the purchase price of an underfloor heating system but uncovering the ongoing cost to run it can be a mystery. Without this information many homeowners shy away from the idea for fear of the unknown. Today we would like to unravel this mystery and show just how affordable underfloor heating can be.  Take a Look at Your Electric Bill There are many different rates found on your bill which can seem daunting, but have no fear, there are only two that you need look at. The first is the total amount of the bill. This is the amount you need to pay each month. The second is the total Kilowatt-hours (kWh) used. This is the total units of electricity used in the bill period. Calculate Your Hourly Electric Rate Simply divide your total bill amount by the kWh used to find your cost per hour. Let’s say for example the total amount of your bill is $170 and you used 1,015 kWh of electricity. Your electric rate comes to $0.167 or 16.7 cents per kWh which not so coincidentally was the household national average in October of 2022.  Find the Wattage of Your Heating Mat ThermoSoft makes it easy to locate this information by displaying each systems power rating on our website alongside its pricing. Since this article describes underfloor heating in a bathroom, lets choose a system designed to heat tile and stone, a common flooring found in bathrooms. In this example we will use one of our ThermoTile Mats, a great choice for tile heating due to their low cost and ease of installation. A typical bathroom can average anywhere from 40-100 square feet. Let's assume our bathroom has 60 square feet of walkable space we wish to heat. The heating mat that would accommodate this area (item# TT40-120), uses 720 watts of power. As we learned, household electricity is measured by kilowatts, so we must convert this number accordingly. To do this, divide this figure by 1,000 which comes to .72 kilowatts.  Calculate the Cost Per Hour to Run Heating Mat Now that we know our electric rate ($0.167 per kilowatt-hour) and the wattage of our heating mat (.72 kilowatts), we can determine the cost per hour to operate our mat by multiplying them together (.167x.72). This comes out to 12 cents per hour. But wait, we are assuming the heat is running for the full hour which is very unlikely. ThemoSoft’s underfloor heating systems are controlled by a thermostat connected to an in-floor temperature sensor that cycles on and off to maintain your desired temperature. In most cases, your floor heating system may only need to be on for 15 minutes per hour. This means it's only actually running 25% of the time bringing your cost of 12 cents down to 3 cents per hour.  Monthly Cost to Operate Your Heating Mat To calculate your monthly cost, multiply the cost per hour to run your mat by the amount of hours in the month. In this example, we will use 30 days since it is the average amount of days in a month. This means that on average there are 720 hours in a month (30x24). At 3 cents per hour your monthly cost for electric underfloor heating comes to only $21.60 per month.  It Gets Even Better We all know that there is no place like home, we also know that we must leave our homes for work, school, and other activities. Pairing your heating system with a programmable thermostat such our UDG4-4999 with touch screen, or our UWG4-4999 with Wi-Fi connectivity allows for maximum heating efficiency. Our monthly cost of $21.60 above assumes we are maintaining the same temperature all throughout the week. We can decrease this cost significantly by running our floor heating system only when we are at home to enjoy it. Final Thoughts Now that you know just how affordable heated flooring is, there is no reason to hesitate any longer. Say goodbye to the unpleasant feeling of cold tile. Step out of the shower and be greeted with the inviting sensation of gentle radiant heat warming your feet. Basement Floor Heating: Top 6 Reasons Homeowners Love It
Basement Floor Heating: Top 6 Reasons Homeowners Love It

6 Reasons Homeowners Love Basement Floor Heating Experience the Luxury of Heated Floors in Your Basement CONVERT YOUR BASEMENT INTO A LIVABLE SPACE Many basements aren’t set up with a nice, cozy living space in mind. Many homeowners only venture down into the basement to do laundry, maintain their furnace, or access their storage. Converting your basement to a finished space is a great way to get the most out of your home. Whether you have a growing family or want to finally build that mancave, utilizing your basement is a great way to expand your homes usable living space.  Fill Your Basement with Gentle Warmth Many people avoid their basements because they can be cold and uncomfortable, especially in the wintertime. Basements are inherently colder do to the fact that they are located underground. However, once you insulate the foundation and install a radiant floor heating system, your basement will be warm and toasty all year round. 1. Quiet Comfort Unlike forced air, which is hottest by the vent, radiant floor heating systems provide an even distribution of heat throughout the room. The heat comes from the ground up gently warming your feet and objects in the room. Forced air can also create a great deal of noise. We have all had to adjust the volume on the television to overpower for the swooshing and humming heard through the vents and registers. Many of us have also been startled by the thump or squeal of heard when cycling on and off. Radiant heating systems do not produce a sound. 2. Energy Efficient Forced air systems also create a noticeable divide between hot and cold air. Vents are often located higher in the room pushing heat to the ceiling, while cool air lingers around you. People often turn up the thermostat to generate even more heat, requiring additional energy. With a basement floor heating system, warmth is generated below your feet and is concentrated lower in the room where it's needed most. 3. Ease of Installation The warmth of a basement floor heating system either comes from a water-based hydronic system or an electricity-based one. Hydronic systems require elaborate piping systems, time consuming labor, and an external source to heat the water. Plus, if a concrete slab is already installed, you would need to remove the slab and replace it to install a hydronic system. A Electric radiant heat comes in thin, easy-to-roll-out mats powered by a thermostat. They do not need to be imbedded in concrete which saves time and money. ThermoSoft's basement floor heating systems are installed using tools that your typical DIYer already has on hand. 4. Maintenance Free Can you imagine a heating system that is totally maintenance-free? There are no filters, vents, or moving parts to worry about replacing. Once installed, it can truly last indefinitely. There is no need for cleaning or routine tune-ups. It can really be that easy to have a warm, cozy basement living space. 5. Better Air Quality Choosing a basement floor heating system means relying less on forced air systems with dirty air ducts. This translates to cleaner air which is both dust and allergen-free. Also, with radiant floor heating, air doesn't become dried out as it does with forced air allowing you to breathe easy all year long. 6. Flexible Floor Covering Options Installing an in-floor heating system does NOT place limitations on the type of floor coverings you can install. Today the most popular choices for basement flooring include tile, vinyl, laminate, and engineered hardwood. If you plan on installing tile flooring, we suggest using our ThermoTile®  A floor heating system which comes in mat or cable form. If you prefer vinyl, laminate, or engineered hardwood, your best option would be WarmStep® Mats which do not require concrete embedment and can be used in floating, glue down, or nail down applications. If new concrete slab is being poured, you can install our ThermoSlab® floor heating system which is embedded directly into the slab. Final Thoughts Basement floor heating is simple, efficient, and can help transform your unused basement space into a place for activities and family time. Top 6 Important Benefits of Snow Melting Mats
Top 6 Important Benefits of Snow Melting Mats

Top 6 Benefits of Snow Melting Mats Uncovering the Benefits of Snow Melting Mats. MAKE YOUR WINTER SEASON A BREEZE WITH SNOW MELTING MATS We all know how harsh winter can be especially if you live in the northern and eastern states. Braving icy walkways and feeling the arctic chill on your skin and can make anyone uncomfortable. Snow removal can be dangerous, costly, and time consuming. Although we cannot change the hand mother nature deals us, we can take measures to prepare for the storm.  Where to Use Snow Melting Mats Snow melting mats provide gentle radiant heat for any out-door setting including residential, commercial, and industrial environments. They are perfect for heating walkways and melting snow on stairways. They can also be used on landings, driveways, patios, and more. 1. Save time and Money on Installation This snow and ice melting system is by far the quickest and simplest solution on the market. Unlike heating systems that must be imbedded in concrete, snow melting mats can be placed on top of existing concrete, asphalt, or pavers and plugged into any outdoor outlet. There is no need to hire any contractors or electricians. Easy plug and play set-up allow you to start using snow melting mats the day you receive them. 2. Versatility Mats can be used independently or interconnected to cover large areas. Extension cables are available to connect mats over larger distances if needed. In addition to their connectivity, mats can be relocated as needed. Simply remove any snow, ice, or debris from the desired area and place your mats. 3. Save time and Money on Snow Removal Keeping up with snow removal can be time consuming and expensive. With all the responsibilities we have in our daily lives, each moment you have is precious. We all wish we had more time to spend with our loved ones or indulge in our favorite leisure activities. Why not free up your schedule by checking another chore off the list? Many people call on snow removal companies for their services. This can be convenient, however with a national average cost of $25 to $75 per hour, these services can drain your bank account. Investing in snow melting mats is a one-time expense that will save you a considerable amount of money over the years. 4. Avoid the Dangers of Snow Removal There are many risks associated with blowing and shoveling snow. In fact, over 11,000 Americans visit the hospital each year due to snow removal related conditions. Some of the most common are include frostbite, hypothermia, back injuries, broken bones and heart problems. Frostbite results from cold temperatures freezing the skin and underlying tissues. Hypothermia occurs when your body temperature drops below 95ËšF causing your heart, nervous system, and organs not to function properly. This condition can be very dangerous and even life threatening. Cold temperatures can also increase your risk of a heart attack. When exposed to cold temperatures, your heart works harder to maintain your body temperature which leads to an increased heart rate and blood pressure. This along with the physical stress of shoveling significantly increases the risk of experiencing a heart attack. 5. Protect Your Flooring When entering from the outdoors in winter we track in snow, water, salt and slush. All of these have the potential to damage your flooring. The first warning sign to look out for is unsightly staining and discoloration. This can lead to a deterioration of your floors finish leaving it vulnerable to further damage. When salt enters your home on the bottoms of your shoes, it can act like a sandpaper leaving small scratches on any flooring surface. Even the grout between your tiles can become cracked by salt when stepped on the wrong way. Many flooring materials can also be damaged by prolonged contact with moisture which can lead to warping and rot. 6. Environmentally and Pet Friendly Spreading sidewalk salt is an affordable and effective solution to snow melting. It does however come with some undesirable side effects that pose a threat to our lawns, gardens, and even our furry friends. A When salt settles near the roots of your plants, it absorbs the water and nutrients your plants desperately need to thrive. This leads to brown patches in your lawn and stunted vegetation. Our pets can also be negatively impacted by ingesting sidewalk salt. Even if pets are not intentionally consuming salt, they can still be exposed when licking salt off their paws. Common side effects include upset stomach, diarrhea, vomiting and dehydration. We Have the System for You As you can see there are many unpleasant and costly issues the winter season can bring. Treat yourself by investing in an electric snow melting system and enjoy a trouble-free winter. Add Basement Floor Heat Easily
    Add Basement Floor Heat Easily

Add Floor Heat to Your Basement Adding heat to cold basement floors. ADD BASEMENT FLOOR HEAT If you've been thinking about installing floor heat in your basement, you're not alone. Basements are great for storage and entertaining, but they can be chilly in the winter. Adding floor heat makes it easier to keep your basement warm during those chilly months. Heating System First, find out which heating system works with the flooring you want to put down. Some are not suggested for "below grade" or below ground installations since basements are more prone to collect water. ThermoTile cable or ThermoTile mats are the best because they get embedded into cement, so they are completely sealed off from moisture. So, if a floor happens or your sump pump stops working, your system is entombed almost and preserved. You CAN do it but it's best to check with the manufacturer first. Use a Moisture Barrier When you're looking to add floor heat to your basement, one of the most important things to consider is how to protect the subfloor from moisture. Most basements have cement slab floors, which sweat and secrete moisture. Laying a moisture barrier between the heating system and the subfloor is essential for protecting your flooring. Often LVT and vinyl are sold as water-resistant, but people think that means waterproof. That's not the case. They can easily get cleaned up but the pad underneath the plank of vinyl flooring is not open to the air, so it can collect mold easily once moisture comes out of the slab and sits in the pad unable to dry. The best way to prevent this from happening is by laying a moisture barrier between your heating system and your subfloor. There are many different options on the market today, including both peel-and-stick membranes and rolls that you can cut and apply yourself. Furniture Layout Another step in adding floor heat to your basement is making sure that you have a good layout. It’s very important to pay attention to detail when laying out your floor heating system, especially if you have any furniture or appliances that sit directly on the floor. The reason for this is because of heat loss. If there are areas where things like couches, rugs, or other things sit directly on the floor out of the heated area on your layout, then there will be areas where cold air can enter from outside through cracks in windows and doors. This will cause the ThermoSoft system to not work as efficiently as possible If you tell your ThermoSoft rep he will factor that into the layout for you. He will also give advice on how much heat you need and how many zones you should be using and how many thermostats would be best suited for your home. Call ThermoSoft Whether you're looking to get more out of your home, or you need to improve your home's value, getting a radiant floor heating system is the answer. It's an investment in your home that will continue paying dividends for years to come. Just be sure to call Thermosoft if you have any questions along the way—we're happy to help. Electric In-floor Heating & the Green Movement Additionally, environmental conservation is a definitive social cause among millennials. The "green" movement could be partially responsible for the growing demand for radiant floor heat. Electric underfloor systems boast low EMF and save around 40% of energy over conventional heating systems. Thermostats designed with energy savings in mind can also help you save money and the environment. Read more on those in Choosing A Floor Heating Thermostat 2021. In an online article by The Times, based on Consumer Reports, "…'energy-efficient' was second only to ‘safe community' on the list of attributes that would most influence a purchase decision, according to a 2015 survey by the National Association of Home Builders.'” Thinking Ahead by Investing in the Future In this competitive housing climate, trends are important when trying to sell. In this regard, adding electric radiant floor heat can prove wildly advantageous. It is a great opportunity to add value to your home and improve the comfort and efficiency of the home's heating system. Comfort and convenience translate to cash. Not only are you benefiting from the extraordinary comfort that comes with radiant heating, but you are also making a valuable investment in your home and your future. By giving yourself what you want, you are ultimately giving consumers what they want, as well.
