What are WarmStep® Electric Floor Heating Mats?
WarmStep® Electric Floor Heating Mats are designed to add comfortable warmth beneath a wide range of finished flooring types, including wood, laminate, engineered wood, vinyl, carpet. Floor heating mats can be installed with floating floors, glue down floors, and nail down floors. It uses ThermoSoft’s FiberThermics® heating technology in a thin low profile mat format. It is the only non-embedded in cement heating mat which significantly saves you on installation costs, labor, time and materials.
Are WarmStep® Electric Floor Heating Mats safe for homes and businesses?
Yes. WarmStep® Electric Floor Heating Mats are designed as a safe electric floor heating solution for residential and commercial spaces. ThermoSoft floor heating systems go through development and quality control testing, and WarmStep® Electric Heating Mats use patented FiberThermics® heating technology with built in safety features.
What floor types can WarmStep® Electric Floor Heating Mats be used under?
WarmStep® Electric Floor Heating Mats can be used under many finished flooring types, including solid wood, laminate, engineered wood, vinyl, carpet. It can be installed with floating floors, glue down floors, and nail down wood. For vinyl and other flexible flooring, confirm thickness and flooring manufacturer requirements before installation.
How are WarmStep® Electric Floor Heating Mats installed?
WarmStep® Electric Floor Heating Mats install directly beneath the finished flooring. It does not require embedding in cement before installation. Depending on the project, the floor may be glued down, nailed down, or floated over the WarmStep Heating mats with an approved underlayment. WarmStep Heating Mats are wired in parallel to a compatible floor heating thermostat. Always follow the ThermoSoft installation manual and have final electrical connections completed by a licensed electrician.
Will WarmStep® Electric Floor Heating Mats add height to my floor?
WarmStep® Electric Floor Heating Mats are approximately 1/16 inch thick, so it is designed to add very little height to the floor assembly. Its low profile helps reduce height transitions between heated and non-heated areas.
Can WarmStep® Electric Floor Heating Mats be used with flooring adhesives?
Yes. WarmStep® Electric Floor Heating Mats use a permeable fabric designed to work with approved adhesive methods. For glue down installations, use adhesives and trowel methods that are approved for the flooring material and ThermoSoft's WarmStep® installation method. Always consult the WarmStep® installation manual.
What is the double glue installation method?
For glue down installations, a thin layer of adhesive is applied to the subfloor, the WarmStep® Electric Floor Heating Mats are placed into that layer, and the finished flooring is installed with the normal adhesive schedule over the mat. The adhesive permeates the WarmStep mat and bonds through the floor assembly.
Can troweling adhesive damage WarmStep® Electric Floor Heating Mats?
A normal adhesive application should not damage the heating element of the WarmStep mat when installation instructions are followed. Use care with metal trowels and follow the adhesive and flooring manufacturer requirements because installation damage is not covered by ThermoSoft's warranty.
Can WarmStep® Electric Floor Heating Mats be used for nail down flooring?
Yes. WarmStep® Electric Floor Heating Mats are designed for direct nail down wood flooring when installed correctly. The heating cable layout creates spaces where fasteners can be placed safely. Never drive a nail, cleat, or staple through a heating cable.
Can I use more than one WarmStep® Electric Floor Heating Mat in a room?
Yes. Most projects use multiple WarmStep Heating Mats to cover the heated area. The mats are laid out together and wired in parallel to the thermostat. They must not be daisy chained or extended in series electrical connection.
Can WarmStep® Electric Floor Heating Mats be cut or shortened?
No. WarmStep® Electric Floor Heating Mats should never be cut, shortened, reshaped, or altered in the field. Choose the correct mat sizes and layout before installation or contact ThermoSoft for layout assistance.
Can the cold lead wires of WarmStep® Floor Heating Mats be shortened?
The cold lead wires of WarmStep® do not produce heat and may be shortened, cut, or extended by a licensed electrician according to the WarmStep® installation manual and local code requirements.
What about areas not covered by WarmStep® Electric Floor Heating Mats?
Not every area of the floor needs to be heated. WarmStep® Electric Floor Heating Mats have a low profile, so heated and non-heated areas can be planned without creating major height differences. ThermoSoft can help you review the layout for optimal coverage.
How much does WarmStep® Electric Floor Heating Mats cost to operate?
Operating cost depends on the heated area, local electric rates, house insulation, thermostat settings, and usage. For a project specific estimate, contact ThermoSoft experts with the room size and planned mat layout.
How many Watts per square foot does WarmStep® Electric Floor Heating Mats produce?
WarmStep® Electric Floor Heating Mats produces approximately 8 to 10 Watts maximum per square foot of radiant floor heat.

A properly installed WarmStep® Electric Floor Heating Mat system can typically provide a comfortable floor temperature increase above the room’s ambient temperature. Actual results depend on the room, floor covering, house insulation, thermostat settings, and installation conditions.
How long do WarmStep® Electric Floor Heating Mats last?
WarmStep® Electric Floor Heating Mats have been installed in homes for decades and continue to work without any issues or maintenance requirements because it doesn't have any moving parts.
